The House passed a 1.524 billion dollar two year state spending program by 94 to 47 as the session nears adjournment. A companion 100 million dollar tax bill would balance the budget with a gas tax hike a cigarette tax rise and a beer tax increase amid expected final action.
A Soviet spokesman in Belgrade said future relations with Yugoslavia look bright though no immediate results are expected from conferences between Kruschev and Tito. Tito hosted the Russians at Brioni after a week of talks, as Yugoslavs kept a cool stance toward Moscow while a path to peaceful coexistence outside the Iron Curtain appeared possible.
The First Methodist Church of Childress will have a new pastor for the coming year. Rev C A Holcomb Jr, pastor for two years, is appointed to the First Methodist church at Sweetwater. Dr J O Haymes, pastor from Plainview for four years, will lead Childress. Haymes, a Southwestern University graduate, holds an honorary Doctor of Divinity from McMurray College. He and Mrs Haymes plan to move to Childress Thursday and he will preach at both services Sunday.
London reports a 70 000 member strike by the Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen begun at midnight Saturday. The action cripples rail service, prompts Eden to deploy troops for mail transport, and raises fears of wartime rationing if the stoppage continues.
Indianapolis story reports Bill Vukovich, two time defending 500 mile winner, burned to death in a five car back stretch pileup after 140 miles. Ed Elisian, Rodger Ward, Johnny Boyd, Al Keller and others involved. Jimmy Bryan led after crash as flames trapped Vukovich.
Cub Pack 63 will hold a pack meeting tomorrow night at 7 30 o'clock at the First Methodist Church. Cubmaster Bud Adams announced this afternoon. All members and their parents are urged to attend.
Washington reports say the Western Big Three urged Russia to hold the forthcoming Big Four meeting in Lausanne Switzerland with a date around July 18 to 21. US officials oppose Vienna as a site due to transit through a Soviet zone and questions linger about Soviet leadership.
Vice President Richard M. Nixon says if the Big Four conference fails the fault lies with the Communists. Speaking at Arlington National Cemetery he warns only military strength and diplomatic firmness can avert war while urging genuine steps toward peace and security for all nations.
Mrs T A Baley died Sunday in Dallas where she had resided after moving from Childress 15 years ago. The body arrives this evening and funeral services are set for Tuesday at First Baptist Church with burial in Childress cemetery. Survived by three sons Edwin Clarence and Robert Baley and two daughters Willis Curren and Fred Haskett, eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
United Nations New York telegraphed that Red China would free four of fifteen American airmen held since the Korean War. The four named officers are Lt. Col. Edwin L. Heller, Capt. Harold E. Fischer, 1st Lt. Lyle W. Cameron, and 1st Lt. Roland W. Parks. No date or method of departure was given. Hong Kong is expected as the exit point.
A United Press tally shows at least 28 violent deaths over the Memorial Day weekend in Texas. Nineteen were from traffic crashes, seven from drownings, and two miscellaneous. A C 124 crash near Killeen injured no one, while a wind gust in Austin killed 15 year old Eustacio Perez when lumber fell from a truck.
In Ocala Florida authorities plan to arraign 73 year old Edward Lindley and his 70 year old wife Bertha on first degree murder charges for a 90 minute gun battle that left three police officers dead and one wounded. The couple reportedly opened fire on about 30 officers before surrendering at their brick home. State’s attorney A T Buie called it premeditated murder saying officers were shot without warning in a neighborhood dispute turned siege. A grand jury indictment was planned.
Managers of the two local softball teams are asked to meet with Little and Pony League directors at 7 30 tonight to work out a schedule for all teams using the Little League field. President Bob Wadsworth said the session aims to finalize arrangements.
Sen. H. Alexander Smith, ranking Republican on the Senate Labor Committee, says Congress will provide the Salk polio vaccine free to all children, ditching Eisenhower’s $28 million request for those who cannot pay. He expects no means test, with all children likely to receive it free. Sen. Lister Hill has introduced a bill for standby control and free vaccination for all children, but committee action has stalled.
