Government Seeks Equal Gasoline Distribution
Federal energy adviser William J. Johnson urged major oil firms to distribute gasoline fairly across the industry to protect about 60,000 independent stations, noting 3,000 independents have already closed and some refineries shuttered or cutting back. He spoke to the Society of Independent Gasoline Marketers of America and said imports can handle current demand while longer-term needs require more domestic capacity. Johnson praised independents as a competitive spur and warned against driving them out of business.
