Sen. Kilmer Corbin of Lubbock racked up a 21 hour filibuster over a state water conservation tax bill. He kept speaking Wednesday into dawn, noting the bill unchanged since yesterday. He argued against paying for something not received as the debate continued.
The chamber of commerce and BCD announced winners of the Trash Pile contest held during Clean-Up Week. First place entries earned $5. ties received $2.50. Winners include Mike Pennell and Sandra Martin in Southeast Childress, Lonzy Morris and LeRoy Nickerson in Colored Addition, H W Moore and Jack Comeaux in Northwest/Northwest, John David Steed in Southwest Childress, and Mickie Easley in Northeast Childress.
A Wichita Falls wholesalers delegation met with the Childress Rotary Club at noon. E. L. Luckett led the group and delivered a brief address. Visitors Leon Yates and Marice McCall of Wichita Falls joined Carl Hudson and Richard Bird as guests.
Cloudbursts and tornadoes lashed Texas South Plains with hail from baseball to marbles. Hale Center reported up to eight inches of rain in under an hour, with streets flooded. Lamesa and Abernathy endured severe electrical storms, while another twister near Chillicothe caused minor damage and an auto blown into a field but driver unharmed. Forecasters warned of more rain across the state within 24 hours.
First acceptances to the Greenbelt Bowl game on August 12 include 15 players split five West and ten East. West Texas State coaches Frank Kimbrough and Clark Jarnagin lead the West group while Garvin Beauchamp and Oliver Jackson head the East from Abilene Christian.
In Stillwater Oklahoma a panty raid prompted campus discipline with two students expelled eight suspended and 14 placed on probation after a riot that drew about 2000 students. Fire Chief Ray Davidson blamed some scantily clad coeds for part of the incident as dormitories were damaged and riot police restored order.
New officers of the Childress Jaycee Club will be installed Thursday night May 26 at 8 p m in the City Auditorium led by president Gordon Gravley. State VP Bob Polson will oversee the ceremony and Ed Stump the new state president will attend.
Washington reports supporters and opponents clash as the Senate Agriculture Committee meets in closed session to consider the House approved farm price support plan. Senator Milton Young predicts committee approval 9 to 6 and Senate passage, despite expected presidential veto if the bill reaches the president.
Three drillstem tests at the Shell Oil Company No 1 Tabor well east of Childress showed no oil. The scouting division at Wichita Falls reports testing depths of 3 820 to 3 858 feet, 4 933 to 4 943 feet, and 5 328 to 5 370 feet. Drilling continues below 5 675 feet with aims to reach 7 700 feet, drilled by Dillard and Waltermire of Wichita Falls.
Regular meeting of the Childress Air Force Reserve unit will convene this evening at 8 in the County Commissioners room. Maj. James Ragsdale said the gathering will be a routine training period for unit members.
Light showers continued over the Childress area aiding soil moisture for spring planting. The Baylor Creek watershed and Lake Childress received additional rainfall with total monthly rainfalls reported at multiple sites, while Burlington resumes water supply from Scott Lake as the city city manager notes drought relief and railroad water purchases.
Rebel snipers stalk Saigon in what officials call the start of a major terrorist campaign against Ngo Dinh Diem. Two loyal Vietnamese officers were killed and two wounded Tuesday night as the Ninh Xuyen gang’s private army, expelled by Diem, resumes violence amid Diem's push for talks with the United States, France, and Britain. The Big Three are expected to reject a four power conference proposal, while Diem asks for a Saigon meeting to discuss regime stability.
Directors of the Chamber and Development will petition Fort Worth and Denver to place a steam locomotive in Childress as a historical monument. They cited the railroad as the town’s backbone and key to the economy. Location pending. Caprock Bus Line owners filed with the Railroad Commission to discontinue service to Childress, the only link to Pampa. Manager Bob Polson gave his monthly activity report.
Manager Wiley Shires reports the Giants practice session moved from today to Friday at 5 30 o clock. The Phillies Little League team will hold a workout Thursday at 4 30 PM weather and grounds permitting.
The Texas House approved a constitutional amendment to double the Veterans Land program from 100 million to 200 million dollars. If voters approve in November 1956 the bond authorization would rise to 200 million. The measure redefines the Veterans Land Board to three members including the governor and land commissioner. The move follows Gov. Allan Shivers opposition to ex officio boards. The House also approved a labor disputes trial location bill. Senate action on amendments is anticipated, with other big spending talks under way.
In Jefferson City Missouri House members shouted and shoved as they marched on the Senate chamber to protest a prior clash between the Senate sergeant at arms and a House member. Senate leaders and Lt Governor Blair intervened as Foley and Bryan were escorted out after additional clashes.
Delbert Lee Turk was chosen to represent Childress at Boys State, hosted by Cox-Farr Post of the American Legion in Austin. The event runs June 5 to 11. Six boys were recommended. Turk was selected by draw amid strong school support, with other nominees including Charles Eatherly Bennie Roten John Mills Gerald Wakefield and G Dowis. The post endorsed continuing non service connected disability pensions for widows and children of veterans via a state resolution.
District Clerk Edwin Cato reports one civil case continued until October, Mark L Bates versus Homer Compton. Another matter, Kath erine Lawrence representing Ronnie Lawrence a minor as Anita Vehslage, was settled out of court. The settlement amount was not announced.
Chief Justice Earl Warren signaled the Supreme Court will issue a ruling before summer recess detailing how states must implement its school desegregation decision. The Court heard arguments last month on methods and timing, with a decision anticipated prior to adjournment.
County Superintendent Wade Kimbrough announces a June 1 transfer application deadline for students moving between districts under the new law. Parents in districts lacking grade levels must also apply. No transfers or approvals occur after the date. applications require parental signatures at the county superintendent's office.
President Eisenhower said a Zhukov meeting at the Big Four talks might yield value and personal talks on postwar events. He stressed no correspondence planned and rejected appeasement as a policy while signaling caution and pursuit of arms reduction and peace.
