Vernon Eubank announces 42 players selected for the Greenbelt Bowl Football Classic to be played at Fair Park Stadium on August 14. Two slots remain to be filled and names will be released after acceptance. Eubank praised the high quality of candidates.

A school bus and a car collided 1.5 miles north of the city on U S Highway 83 at 3 20 a m Saturday causing major bus damage and heavy car damage. Gregg Minter Hargrave received a ticket for failure to pass safely after apparently falling asleep at the wheel. No injuries were reported. Bus driver John Richard Sharpe of Walsh Corp led 27 Walsh School District seniors on a trip to Six Flags. passenger Jimmy Czewski had minor scratches and bruises. A second Walsh School bus later ferried the students to Childress.
President Johnson proposes a three phase $4 billion excise tax reduction to cut mainly auto, telephone, and luxury goods taxes. Immediate 3 percent automobile cut plus 2 percent in 1967, and telephone tax drop to 3 percent by next January with full repeal by 1969. The plan aims to boost purchasing power, production, and jobs, leading toward a balanced budget.

Three rural accidents occurred in Childress County during April injuring two persons and causing about 19 895 dollars in damage. Sgt. Dan R Dowdy notes the four month 1965 total in Childress County shows 14 wrecks with four killed and 15 injured and 40 605 dollars in property damage.
Officers of the Childress County Chapter of the American Cancer Society were re elected. President Mrs Malone Hagan and Vice president Mrs Pat Jones, Secretary Mrs Deane Dodge, and Treasurer Mrs Howard Preston were named. Committee reports were heard and Mrs Hagan received a readership certificate from Don Lambert of Lubbock.
Defense Secretary Robert McNamara yielded to congressional protests and suspended the planned merger of the Army Reserves into the National Guard. The plan would have abolished the Reserves and left a 550,000-strong Guard, with a projected $150 million annual taxpayer saving, but Congress will study the issue before any action. McNamara announced the pause at a joint news conference, reversing earlier stance that Congress approval was unnecessary.
Richard Briley, a Childress High School senior, has been accepted as a cadet at the United States Air Force Academy after meeting weight requirements. He plans to gain more weight and report June 28, with a congratulatory note from Brig. Gen. Robert F. McDermott.

Water service will be cut off Monday along 7th Street Southwest to South Main Street on Avenue C one block north and two blocks south of Avenue C. City crews aim to finish cleaning the water lines by Tuesday, announced Superintendent Roy Hassell Saturday.
Funeral services for Mrs. Marisa Tacitha Witcher 86 were held at Quitaque Baptist Church with Rev. Bill Curry and Rev. Frank Beauchamp. Burial followed in Silverton. A Briscoe County resident for 53 years she died Thursday in Lockney hospital. Born in Georgia she married L D Witcher in 1895 and the couple farmed here until his 1920 death. Surviving are four daughters two of whom live in Quitaque, three sons 23 grandchildren 13 great grandchildren and eight great great grandchildren.
Salvation Army fund drive workers had reported 302.50 by Saturday, Drive Chairman Dalton Martin announced. All workers and captains not yet reporting are urged to do so, donations can be turned in to captains or to Jimmy Eddy, Salvation Army treasurer, at the First National Bank.
Congressman Walter Rogers will protest a proposed Agriculture Department rule that restricts skip row planting for cotton. He plans letters to Secretary Freeman and the ASCS and asks for a House Agriculture Committee public hearing. He argues the rule lowers cotton farmers’ income and disrupts conservation and grain sorghum practices in the Panhandle and Plains regions.
An organization meeting and workout for boys eligible for the American Legion Baseball team is set for 3 p m today at the Fair Park baseball field. Eligible players must be born on or after September 1 1944. The team will compete in Amarillo area south district.
Martha Galligan and Alice Wyatt named top candidates after tryouts on Thursday to lead the Childress High School marching band. Finalists selected for twirling duties include Brenda Boykin Teresa Howard Billie Hopkins and Janice Frith.
A tornado struck Fort Phantom Lake near Abilene injuring three people and destroying trailer houses docks and a cabin. It damaged Battery A Nike Missile site sign and lifted away, with hail and 80 mph winds reported.
An avalanche at the Schneefernerhaus hotel near Zugspitze in Germany killed at least 11 and injured many others. About 300 skiers were present as rescue teams aided victims, including two Americans. The stormy spring conditions triggered the slide, affecting terrace sunbathers and a cable car.
