Gene Symonds United Press manager for south east Asia died Friday from a savage beating by Chinese students amid riots during a Communist inspired transportation strike. A police constable and a 16-year-old Chinese student were also killed. The violence began when truckloads of students attacked police who used water hoses to quell a demonstration. Symonds, 29, was fatally injured at the scene as a roadblock was set to halt the spread of the rioters. He had returned from the Bandung conference and rushed to report the outbreak. He died at 2 50 p m after an emergency operation. Eyewitnesses noted a police van nearby.
