The Atomic Energy Commission postponed the 14th and final shot of the 1955 spring test series at Yucca Flat 35 minutes before detonation. The 25 kiloton device, designed for Los Alamos scientists, faced weather delays. a new evaluation was set to decide if firing could occur at 6 a.m. est tomorrow.
Four people died when a four place private plane lost a wing in a thunderstorm and crashed on Roger Taylor farm near Paducah. The wreck burned fiercely. victims were Dr H J Lathrop and Mrs Kathry Good Norris of Carlsbad New Mexico, Mrs George Hogan and Mary Cooley of El Paso. They were en route to Minneapolis for a Gideon Society convention.
Gov Allan Shivers presss for a two cent hike in the state gasoline tax as lawmakers face a 120 day session milestone. The House approved a one cent increase while resisting a two cent rise. Senate finance leaders say a record 1.524 billion dollar general appropriation bill is near completion. Debates may open next week with the session possibly ending within ten to fourteen days.
Grady Halbert of Crowell told Rotary Club members that soil conservation should be a community priority during Soil Conservation Week. He noted per capita food land has fallen from about 3.25 to 2 acres and urged clubs to participate in local soil programs. Visiting Rotarians and several guests attended.
Mrs. J. C. Thomas of Abilene, a former Childress resident, died in Abilene yesterday. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. at Abilene Christian College Church of Christ with burial in Childress. graveside rites at 4 p.m. conducted by Harrell Collard of the Childress Church of Christ. Burial handled by Newberry Funeral Home. She and her late husband ran the Childress Post from 1907 to 1925 and owned several Childress buildings. Survived by daughter Mrs. Clarence Bailey of Abilene, sisters Mrs. B. F. Stout of Memphis and Mrs. O. B. Quarles of Alwoyd, N. M., and brothers H. E. Howell of Oklahoma City and W. B. Howell of Athens.
A Catholic priest Father Ramon Barcena and six lay Catholic leaders were arrested on Tuesday in two interior Argentine cities. Barcena, a professor and secretary at Sacred Heart of Jesus college in Cordoba, faces charges for distributing pamphlets police deem subversive.
Soviet Premier Nikolai Bulganin said at a nine nation eastern European conference that Moscow will study a Western invitation to a Big Four summit with Eisenhower. He accused the West of letting West Germany rearm and warned of arms including atomic and chemical weapons. He backed Red China in the Formosa dispute and noted the Soviet note proposing a four power heads of state conference with foreign ministers will be studied.
President Eisenhower said he is ready to attend a Big Four chiefs of state meeting to test Russia's sincerity on relieving world tensions. He prefers a neutral country for a three day summit and noted the invitation extended by the United States Britain and France.
Gov Allan Shivers and Attorney General John Ben Shepperd testified under oath before the House special committee probing the Veterans Land Board. Both denied fault in the $100 million program as lawmakers reviewed indictments and past visits related to Bascom Giles.
The Shell Oil No 1 Tabor well, 12 miles east of Childress, begins drill stem tests at 3,820 to 3,858 feet with 20 feet of drilling mud recovered. The wildcat is planned to reach 7,700 feet in search of oil or gas.
The 59 day long 14 state Louisville & Nashville strike ends after a striker is critically wounded in Pensacola amid a related Southern Bell strike. Police arrest William Harold Slaughter on assault and weapon charges as union and company negotiators reach a four hour conference to conclude the dispute.
Four winners in the Clean-up Week essay contest were announced after judging by The Book Club. Senior winner was Jerry Hall with other winners Phyllis Loter junior Pat Alexander sophomore and Don Dillard freshman. About 14 essays were submitted for final consideration after preliminary judging of all entries.
