A combined force of 30 U S naval boats and 70 South Vietnamese craft push up the Mekong River in the first waterborne assault into Cambodia. Troops are landed near Neak Luong ferry crossing as air and ground offensives expand with 10 000 troops involved and heavy armored support.
Senate opposition to the Vietnam war grows as Senator Fulbright asserts a majority will vote to restrict funding. He predicts a Senate move within 10 days could push Nixon toward a conference to settle the war and re-evaluate policy. The interview questions address constitutional crises and the Tonkin Gulf resolution.
Secretary of Welfare Robert H. Finch said that anti Dick statements by Vice President Spiro Agnew helped charge the atmosphere leading to the Kent State killings. He spoke to about 40 students on a tree shaded lawn near his department. Finch suggested Agnew rhetoric contributed to heating up the climate surrounding the antiwar rally.
The Associated Press reports stout winds blanket Texas on Saturday scaring hikers and golfers. Gusty coastal winds prompted Weather Bureau small craft warnings from Port Arthur to Brownsville. Wind warnings waved at lakes statewide with scattered thundershowers and hail.
Atty Gen Crawford Martin rules state cannot pay a legislator or his firm for goods or services to a state agency if the lawmaker served when funds were appropriated. Reps Don Cavness and W S Heatly likely feel impact as Cavness’ firm insured MHMR vehicles under a bid contract. The opinion follows a complaint about Cavness’s insurance firm receiving state checks.
The Texas Crop and Livestock Reporting Service will mail an acreage survey to about 40 000 Texas farmers in mid May including many in Childress County. Responses will form the official statewide and county crop acreage estimates aiding production planning and market outlooks. State Statistician Cary D Palmer stresses timely returns to ensure county representation.
The White House calls the nine day Cambodian operation an outstanding military success and reports large enemy materiel captures. After U S troops leave next month, involvement will be limited to arms supplies and possible air strikes, with no ground troops or Cambodian army advisers.
SMU will form the University Assembly a new body combining legislative and advisory roles. It will involve students faculty and mid level administrators and may replace parts of the faculty and student senates. The board of trustees established the body Friday to guide university life policy.
AP report says officers seized 350 pounds of marijuana valued near 700000 in an undercover traffic case. Seven long haired men and two teenage girls were arrested. Most suspects were from Chicago area with one from San Antonio. A separate seizure Thursday yielded 92 pounds of heroin worth about 25 million at retail. Four charged.
Texas college administrators faced militant students in a statewide clash over campus control. Gov. Preston Smith and state police mobilized up to 350 officers in three days of University of Texas disturbances. Tear gas, a broken capitol window, and seven injuries were reported as leaders prevailed in most places.
Funeral services for Mrs Marie Barnes Thompson 83 will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Presbyterian Church with Rev Bailey Phelps and Arthur Judd assisting. Burial is in Childress Cemetery. She died Friday night at her home and was born in Kentucky on February 14 1887. She moved to Childress from Amarillo in 1916 and married Wayne Thompson in 1916.
About 1,000 helmeted laborers attacked peace demonstrators near City Hall in New York, vandalizing Pace College. At least 70 injured as police and Mayor Lindsay faced manpower shortages. contractors allegedly offered a bonus to break heads. The mob chanted patriotic slogans and damaged campus windows during the incident.
The Texas Election Bureau reported no statewide runoff for Democrats this year as May 2 results favored Lloyd Bentsen Jr. over Ralph Yarborough. Final figures show Denton won the Supreme Court Place 3 contest. Yarborough trails. Contested races yielded Bentsen toping Yarborough for Senate and Crawford Martin leading Brown for attorney general. Distribution of surplus commodities is planned for 217 Ave. A with authorizations required for proxy recipients.
Two youths aged 12 and 13 were caught by city police throwing eggs at a house in northwest Childress. Chief Alvis Maddox said another report of eggs at a Southeast Childress house prompted a warning to parents to monitor their children. Those caught could be jailed, fined, and made to pay damages unless vandalism stops.
