Grant Moves South to Vicksburg With Raids and Feints
Ulysses S. Grant drives his army south from LaGrange toward Vicksburg Mississippi aided by a long cavalry raid led by Benjamin H. Grierson and a feint north of the city by William T. Sherman. Grierson’s 1,700 men cut rail lines and destroyed telegraph wires over 600 miles in 16 days. Sherman’s feint and Porter’s gunboats created smoke and deception to weaken Pemberton’s defense as Grant prepared crossing below Vicksburg.
