The New York Irishmen known as the Fort Worth Five remain in federal custody rather than testify before a grand jury about gunrunning to the Irish Republican Army. They are housed at Seagoville Federal Correctional Institution near Dallas in a minimal security setup due to overcrowding, with access to dayroom facilities, meals in the dining hall, and outdoor activities. The men, all NYC residents, include Kenneth Tierney, Thomas Laffey, Mathias Reilly, Daniel Crawford, and Paschal Morahan, representing varied nationalities and visa statuses. The investigation’s exact gun-smuggling plot remains undisclosed, though a prior hearing suggested smugglers possibly moved arms from Mexico to Ireland.
Five men remain in custody awaiting the November 2 expiry of the grand jury term. If released they could be remanded again or sent back after potential reindictment. Lawyers argue immunity offered by Judge Brewster may not apply in Britain, risking extradition. Senator Edward Kennedy cites a letter from the men claiming they are victims of Belfast Unionists and English Tories. Fort Worth sources note British authorities supplied information leading to the arrests. The Treasury Department oversees the gun trafficking probe.
