Turkeys Up Cast Down in South Central Decline
Production data from 1954 to 1959 show South Central farms cutting turkey numbers by 47 percent while the nation fell 49 percent. Per farm output rose nationally 150 percent and 100 percent in the South Central states. Extension expert F. Z. Beanblossom cautions Texas operations must grow larger and more commercial to stay competitive. Hatchery reports since December 3, 1960 show about 40 million poults hatched in the ten largest turkey states, with 26 percent heavy whites, 64 percent bronze and other heavies, 10 percent lights. Texas hatched over 29 million heavy breed poults, with just over 2 million heavy breed hatchings the previous year. If hatchings rise 12–15 percent, further price weakness could occur in 1961, with weather and disease risks noted.
