Vietnamese Flame Thrower Raid Posts at Da Nang Outpost

A force of about 100 North Vietnamese attacked a U.S. artillery base 40 miles south of Da Nang, overpowering defenses before being pushed back in hand to hand fighting. The assault left 11 U.S. dead and 32 wounded, with 27 North Vietnamese bodies found inside the camp. S Sgt. William Cruse earned a Silver Star for valor after directing defense despite injuries.

Estelline Rites Today For Mrs H S Parnell

Funeral services for Mrs. H S Parnell 91 of Lubbock are set for 2 p m today at Estelline Church of Christ with Lynn Wolf officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery at Memphis. Mrs Parnell died Monday in a Lubbock nursing home. She was born in Berry County Illinois and moved to Hall County in 1906 then to Lubbock five years ago. She belonged to the Church of Christ and the Rebekah Lodge. Survivors include sons James of Lubbock John and Joe of Vista California Jack of Paducah and Gordon of Borger. daughters Ruthie Stewart of Gilmer Ruby Hansen of Thousand Oaks Calif Sadie Morrow and Jewel Hanson of Van Nuys Calif and Clara Corley of Dallas. 27 grandchildren 63 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.

Wheat crop nearing completion in Kirkland and Childress

The Kirkland area wheat crop is about 95 percent complete while Childress is around 75 to 80 percent. Buyers have purchased over 312 cars at four spots, two in Kirkland and two in Childress. The 1969 crop per acre is running slightly ahead of 1968.

Teenagers Ignite Fatal Parkersburg Family Blaze

Susan Bailey, 15, and her 13-year-old brother Roger allegedly set a fire that killed 12 Baileys in a tarpaper house rented for 65 dollars a month. Police say they used gasoline to ignite the blaze, which devastated the family two weeks before the funeral.

Detroit Officer Cleared in 1967 Algiers Motel Killing

A white jury acquitted Detroit police officer Ronald W. August of first degree murder in the July 26 1967 shotgun slaying of Auburey Pollard 19 at the Algiers Motel Manor Annex during the 1967 Detroit riots. Police and National Guard had swept the building searching for snipers and left the bodies of Pollard Temple 18 and Cooper 17.
