President Eisenhower underwent an emergency operation at Walter Reed Army Hospital to remove a diseased section of the small intestine. Doctors reported his condition as excellent with rapid and complete recovery expected in four to six weeks and said he could run for re election.
JP Merriman Smith, veteran White House correspondent, warned that Eisenhower's new heart attack and major surgery raise doubt about a 1956 bid. He told the Florida Daily Newspaper Association that GOP and Democratic reactions hinge on recovery and timing ahead of the August convention.
Eugene Riddle of Wichita Falls was sentenced to two years on probation by District Judge Luther Gribble after pleading guilty to theft from Marvin Dobbs in district court Saturday. A probation term is explained as stricter than a suspended sentence.
US officials labeled Nikolai Bulganin's disarmament proposals pure propaganda and forecast a firm rejection. They argued the plan offered no new ideas and urged disarmament without a faultless international accord. Britain's officials in London welcomed no immediate reply pending Western consultation. Bulganin cited Soviet troop cuts and demobilization figures as context for calls to reduce Western forces in Germany.

US Sen. Price Daniel Ralph Yarborough W Lee O'Daniel J Evetts Haley and Reuben Senterfitt pursued votes last week by stressing crime and corruption and the Texas water problem. Daniel closed his Fort Worth campaign drive and urged thorough probes into alleged misconduct in Austin and Brady bombing. Yarborough urged added aides to prosecute government frauds. Haley and O’Daniel highlighted veterans land scams and school segregation positions. Yarborough said he had 51 stump speeches since June 1 with 30 more planned.
Soviet Premier Nikolai Bulganin urged Britain to mirror Moscow's move to cut armed forces. He sent letters to Anthony Eden and Konrad Adenauer, noting a 1.2 million strong Soviet military and urging immediate, internationally controlled disarmament steps to ease military burdens and build peace.
Dr. E Wilson Cole longtime pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Childress since 1948 resigns to accept the Woodland Presbyterian Church in Houston posting. He plans to move about July 1 after Easter arrival in 1948 with a record of active civic leadership including Rotary, Quarterback Club, Boy Scouts roles, Community Chest and Red Cross drives. His wife Mrs Cole also participated in local activities.
Clark reports 65 bushels per acre from Concho brand wheat on the Granville Clark farm northeast of Childress. He will seed and hold all grain with neighbors given first choice. Commanche in the same field yielded 45 bushels per acre on the irrigated tract. County Agent Bill Moore says farmers asked him to secure Concho seed wheat and he expects word in a few days.
A line of hail and thunderstorms stretched across northern Texas into San Antonio with Fort Worth issuing two severe thunderstorm advisories. Lubbock reported hail and a thunderstorm as Red River area stayed clear north, while rural Hulver near Estelline noted a three inch downpour.
Secretary of State John Foster Dulles will meet next week with Canadian Foreign Minister Lester B. Pearson and German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer to discuss strengthening NATO in non military fields. Sen. Walter F. George will likely attend as NATO expansion aid talks focus on economic and political cooperation. The talks respond to Russia's renewed economic campaign and Western concerns over NATO's future.
Former Polish government in exile premier Stanislav Mackiewicz, in an interview with United Press, denounced Britain and the United States as traitors and said he would return to Poland on June 23 for political reasons. He claimed there is no hope of liberation by the West and vowed to counteract refugee doubts while seeking to influence conditions in Poland.
W. P. Thompson of Crowell was arrested by city police about 2 o'clock Saturday morning and held on a theft over $50 charge. Thompson was returned to Crowell Saturday by the Crowell Sheriff’s department. The car Thompson drove was reported stolen in Wichita Falls and was recovered Saturday night by the Wichita Falls sheriff.
Three Knights of Pythias members received 25 year service pins at a Thursday night meeting. The honorees were Roy Mack Paul Goodson and A V McFarland with past Grand Chancellor Bryan Thomas of Electra presenting the jewels.

Senator Richard Russell urged a further one billion dollar reduction in foreign aid, pushing back against the White House request of about 4.9 billion. He argued the House cuts were still insufficient and warned of ongoing resistance as the Senate reviews the measure before final action.
Gov. Averell Harriman of New York announced his active candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination in a speech at a New York union convention. Republican chairman Judson Morhouse countered that Eisenhower’s illness should not derail his own or Harriman’s campaigns as he questioned the President’s fitness to run.
Local 4-H youths head to Texas A M for the annual Round-Up. Delegates Cynthia Caradine and Louise Harper depart Monday, with Mrs. P. W. Harper joining. County Agent Bill Moore leads the grass judging team and two more delegates. The event spans three days with courses for 4-H members and hosts over 3,000 participants statewide.
The second annual homecoming of the Community Center School will be held Saturday, June 16, at the school house. Registration begins at 4 PM. Each family brings a basket lunch unless distant from Childress. coffee tea and soft drinks provided. Ex-students and teachers urged to attend for a reunion of old friends.
A Navy F6F4 Panther fighter crashed into a residential street in Minneapolis Saturday killing six people including four from one family and injuring five children critically. Six victims include Maj George Armstrong and Mrs Gaines and two of their children. Debor ah Susan DeWolfe, 7. and Joe Gaines, 11. Navy says Armstrong declared an emergency and the plane faltered as he turned away from Wood-Chamberlain Air Base. Senator Thye urged immediate halt of military flight operations pending investigation.
Four Kirkland teachers resign, Alvin Dennington and wife move to Hobbs near Rotan for district superintendent and teacher roles, Leon Bureth leaves to coach at Oklainton, Mrs Delaney relocates to Amarillo. Three remain: Mrs Jewett Earl Scarbrough, Mrs Alice Lacy, and Mrs Earl Scarbrough. Board president Ralph Sides says applications are being received.
Brady promoter Brady Sheffield offered to take a lie detector test to clear himself of suspicion in the booby trapping of Sam McCollum’s station wagon. McCollum, 37, lay in hospital improving and able to feel in his toes after a broken leg, while District Attorney Allcorn and Ranger Capt. Cowsert questioned him briefly. Ruffin, another defendant, said he would consider taking the test to help Sheffield, and Sheffield’s offer followed intense questioning.
