Fire Destroys City Landmark in Childress County
Fire gutted the Fletcher home at 700 Be S destroying a City landmark around 5 30 pm Friday. Fire marshal Y B Merrell said investigation will continue likely through the week to determine the cause. Jimmy Hackler owner of the structure said it may have started in the downstairs southwest corner and that the vacant two story building burned quickly. Firefighters fought the blaze for about an hour noting lack of a snorkel truck added to the challenge. A renter was scheduled to move in soon but no furniture had been brought in.

Funeral services set for Travis Long of El Monte
Funeral services for Travis Blake Long 61 of El Monte California are set for 4 p.m. Monday at Carey Baptist Church with Rev. Valerie Henderson officiating. Burial follows in Carey Cemetery under Newberry's direction. Long died Thursday near Needles California from an apparent heart attack. He was a machinist for United Die Casting Co. in Los Angeles and a 25 year resident of El Monte. Funeral services for Mabel Lavonia Garrett 52 will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Newberry Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Childress Cemetery. She died Friday night after a brief illness. She was born September 22 1922 in Grant Oklahoma and married Wollie G Garrett October 10 1962. Ward's Store Burglarized In Nighttime Heist
Burglars broke into Montgomery Ward between 9:30 p.m. Friday and 8:30 a.m. Saturday, stealing merchandise valued at 1257.88 including a portable TV, four stereo players, 21 Timex watches, wind breakers, and clocks. Police say the robbers casing the store beforehand did precise, repeated trips between the building and their car in an alley near the Texas Employment Commission office.

Langford Pleads Guilty to Drunk Driving in County Court
John Hugh Langford of Carthage Texas was fined 100 dollars plus court costs, sentenced to 15 days in jail and given six months probation after pleading guilty to drunk driving in County Court on Friday. Langford was arrested by the Department of Public Safety.
