Carrie Mae Hardin, a longtime Childress resident, died at 6:30 a.m. Saturday in Vernon Hospital after a two week stay. She had been ill for several years. Funeral services are set for 4 p.m. Monday at Newberry Chapel with Rev. Luther R. Bradley officiating.

Harper Knight and Cliff Campbell won Democratic nominations in a light runoff. Knight, seeking County Judge, edged Frank Dakis 764 to 411 and faces Republican Mrs. L L Baker in November. Campbell, for Commissioner of Precinct Four, led 225 to 198 but has no Republican opponent. Total turnout was 1,175 with about 3,600 qualified voters.
The Labor Department reports 5 percent unemployment for May, the highest since 1965, up from 4.8 percent in April and 3.5 percent last December, with 41 million unemployed after seasonal adjustment. Don Palmer of Vernon and former Childress resident makes Abilene Christian College Dean's Honor Roll with a 4.02 GPA in Education Administration.
Mrs. Ruby Rhea Vinson died at 5 30 am Saturday in Clifton Texas at age 69. Her last residence was 1006 Ave Northwest. Funeral services were held Saturday night under Newberry direction. She was born August 26 1900 in Leonard Texas and married Ralph C Vinson January 1 192? in Quanah. He died September 28 1966. She was a Kong member in Childress.
Thirty three Candy Stripers and three Hospital Auxiliary members completed the Red Cross First Aid course taught by Russell Moore and Jimmie Smith. Adults honored included Mesdames Jack Fox Charles Christy and Weldon W Teague.
State officials probe allegations at Austin State Hospital. Rep Don Cavness quotes claim sexual promiscuity between patients and attendants in the children's unit and mistreatment including tying a teen to a basketball pole for over 24 hours. Reports also describe a quiet room with naked patients kept for days while others watched through a screen.
Two members of the first known antiwar officer group were removed from sensitive intelligence work at the Chief of Naval Operations. Lts. Gordon Kerr and James Pahura were reassigned to intelligence analyst duties after their affiliation with the Concerned Officers Movement. Both junior lieutenants learned of the move Thursday. Navy did not disclose new postings until Friday.
One person was hospitalized and heavy damage occurred to both vehicles in a late Friday crash in the 1400 block of Avenue F Northwest. Mrs. Syble Norman of Childress was taken to Childress General Hospital after her car was hit from behind while turning left. Floyd Larkin Stevens of Panhandle received a ticket for following too close. Both vehicles were westbound. Police Chief Alvis Maddox and Assistant Chief Wayland Wright investigated.
George O. Spear, a veteran's service officer, said his office will reopen Monday after being closed for two weeks. He announced the return on Saturday.
