J A Hilburn ends a 35 year Postal Service career this Friday when Carroll L Byrd is named acting Postmaster. Hilburn’s life spanned newspaper work oil business and military service with WWI and Gettysburg moments. Byrd, a 1936 Childress High School graduate, steps into the top post.

Buffalo hunt to accompany Greenbelt Bowl event
Frank Ehrle of Childress plans to shoot a buffalo donated by Reynolds Ranch Kent Texas for the August 15 Greenbelt Bowl activities. He received permission to hunt the buffalo in the field and will dress it there before bringing it to Childress tomorrow night.

Street Signs Painted by Boy Scouts in Childress

Light rains began in the Panhandle, FEI Paso area, and along the Gulf Coast as thunder showers thin. Warm air and fog developed in East Texas while cloud cover varied across the state. No severe weather observed. Highs ranged from 108 at Presidio to 89 at Houston and Beaumont. Abilene received .52 inch, Austin .42, and Lufkin .37. Temperatures dipped to 64 at Alpine and 83 at Corpus Christi. Beaumont and Alpine logged .07 inch since midnight. Additional lows included Dallas 75, Houston 76, Galveston 80.
