The 88th annual Childress County Old Settlers Celebration begins with registration in Far Park Auditorium and features the Old Settlers Parade marking the event's long-awaited start.
A preliminary injunction limits picketing to five protesters per gate at Westinghouse Electric Corp in Pittsburgh as mass demonstrations have kept about 10 000 workers off the job. The order was issued by Allegheny County Judge Maurice Louik.
Insurance men told the State Insurance Board that Texas drivers face auto premium increases totaling about $500,000 daily. They urged higher rates that would raise typical motorist costs by about $20 to $8 (text unclear) as they seek new auto rate increases.

Associated Press reports Grannis Arkansas marshals will evict 24 vigil members from a three bedroom home as they await what they believe to be the end times. Spokesmen say the move should be quiet despite strong beliefs about an imminent apocalyptic event marked by biblical lightning signs.
The Childress Chamber of Commerce board announced Dr Keith Seougall, a general practitioner currently practicing in Canada, will join local practice after visa processing. He and his wife and two children plan to relocate to Childress between August and October, with Seougall to be based at Fox Clinic.
The Childress Public Library reported growth in patronage at a regular quarterly meeting. Librarian Mrs Cecil Mills said 2 594 patrons checked out 4 498 books in the past three months and noted new patrons as 44 adults and 40 children. The Summer Reading Program lists 74 participants with 26 readers already finishing.
