The United States plans a space test with a 135 foot balloon lofted by a Thor rocket in a brief up and down flight set for early Wednesday. If it reaches 950 miles altitude it could be seen across much of the eastern U S and may lead to an orbiting passive satellite to reflect signals.

A tornado struck Loraine in Mitchell County around 3 30 p m damaging a warehouse and several homes and buildings. No injuries were reported. One inch of rain and hail accompanied the unseasonable storm that toppled three frame houses and damaged a lumber yard, a drive in cafe, a bank door, and a drugstore. The Mitchell County News office suffered a broken plate glass window.

Paratroopers Killed as Reds Ambush Highway Column
An American officer and 17 Vietnamese paratroopers were killed when guerrillas ambushed a convoy about 40 miles north of Saigon. Four paratroopers were missing. government troops and U S helicopters pursued Viet Cong across several fronts as airlifted forces moved to the ambush area. The battle continued with multiple reports of Viet Cong activity in the Mekong Delta.
