United Press International reports ear hurricane force winds pounded Amarillo and a line of thunderstorms swept the Texas Panhandle and South Plains causing tree damage and heavy rain. Wind gusts reached 69 mph, rainfall over an inch in 15 minutes, with no injuries.
A youth revival event at First Baptist Church runs July 13 to July 20 with services at 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. Community teens and families are invited to participate nightly.
Release from chairmen outlines parade registration by July 17 and entries due by 9:30 a.m. July 18 at Fair Park. Parade divisions include floats clowns horsemen vehicles with judging based on theme originality and detail. Prizes range from 2.50 to 50 plus a Grand Prize and extra for most unique entry. Beta Sigma Phi hosts Bathing Beauty Contest at 7 p.m. July 19 with 14 plus entrants, no sponsor or fee, entries due by 5 p.m. July 17.
The Old Settlers Association and Boat and Fishing Club present a Water Show on Sunday July 20 at Baylor Lake as part of the 70th Anniversary events. Free boat rides start at 1 pm with show at 2 pm. Committee chairs announced include Harmon Mullenix Dugan Boles Michie Greer Briley Hardison Leach Slingerland and Sheriff Smith.
Three day Old Settlers Reunion program in Childress lists events at Fair Park Rodeo Arena Hotel Childress and City Hall. Highlights include match roping finals, Old Fiddlers Contest, grand parade, bar-b-q, memorial service, business session, street dance, kids fishing derby, square dance, and bathings beauty and song festival with hotel rates for out of town attendees.
Tickets for the Old Settlers barbecue go on sale Monday in three downtown drug stores. The noon meal barbecue is set for Friday July 18 at the Rotary Bowl Fair Park. Tickets cost 1 dollar each. T. R. White head of the association invites all to attend.
Wade Dewayne Bradford was arrested Friday by city and county officers for burglary at the county precinct 3 warehouse. Sheriff Gaylon B. Smith said Bradford, 18, was charged for the June 12 burglary of tools a battery gasoline and other items. He was released Saturday on a 1500 dollar bond.
Weather delays interrupt the Memphis Chisox versus Red Sox game Saturday night. The contest will resume Monday after the 4:30 p.m. session with Memphis facing the Yankees at 8:15 p.m. coordinated by Bob Reynolds.
The Childress County Singers plan an all day oldtime singing Sunday July 20 in the city auditorium honoring Old Settlers on their 70th anniversary. Activities start at 10 am with preaching at 11 30 am a noon basket lunch in the Rotary Bowl and afternoon singing from 1 to p m. Officials expect more than 150 guests including quartets trios and other groups. M H Conn president invites county ladies to bring lunches for guests and oldtimers.
The Childress Index publishes a 70th anniversary Edition to celebrate the city’s and newspaper’s life. The staff notes time limited space prevented adding all stories and invites readers to buy the edition for 25 cents with a 15 cent mailing option per copy.
Bernard Goldfine accused Howse investigators of a smear pry and spy campaign as the subcommittee widens its inquiry into his ties with Sherman Adam. He called the actions a fishing expedition and said new revelations would arise if his business records were obtained.
A House subcommittee presses financier Goldfine over links with Adams and possible favors. Investigators seek books from East Boston Co Boston Port Development Co and Northfield Mills to explain $776,879 in uncashed checks. Contempt possible if records are refused.
Voters in the Childress and Kirkland School Districts approved consolidating districts and maintaining a tax, with a total tally of 87 to 1 in favor. Kirkland cast 20 for and none against, Childress 67 to 1, as plans moved toward a community center and equipment needs. A tax equalization board was appointed, and bus routes for the new district were checked showing eight buses suffice for service.
Amarillo authorities announced a major narcotics seizure led by the arrest of 78 year old widow Mrs W N Robberson at the Apache Motel raid. Officials described the seizure as the largest in Amarillo since a 20 pound marijuana confiscation three years earlier. The haul included morphine codeine and uncut European brain.
The following week Childress residents will cooperate with Mrs Doris J Clements to provide special census information for the regional office of the U S Department of Commerce Supervisor James W Stroud of Dallas said the questions cover secondary jobs in addition to the regular monthly employment inquiries.
Valentino Bolango and Adriano Sada, both 31, left Torino on September 2, 1956, cycling 13 500 miles over 22 months. They traveled through Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey, and beyond to India and the United States, with plans to write a book after their 27 month journey. They expect to return to Italy by Christmas and carry 160 pounds of gear including sleeping bags and spare parts. They met Nehru during their India segment and plan stops in Dallas New Orleans Saint Louis Chicago and New York before sailing home via Spain.
The County Commissioners Court will meet at 10 a.m. in the courthouse. The Brem School Board convenes at the School Administrative Office. The City Council from Brem meets at 7 30 p.m. at City Hall.
Winds gusted to 80 to 84 mph during a heavy rain storm at 840 pm Saturday as recorded by CAA at the air field. No wind damage reported by 1025 pm and other area data unavailable due to weather interrupting teletype. Moisture reached .16 inches at the field by 1025 pm, with afternoon highs near 100 degrees at Childress.
In East Berlin Dung Bi Wu of the Chinese Politburo urged an extreme fight against Yugoslav national communism calling it a product of American imperialism. He spoke at the East German party congress sharing the stage with Khrushchev style invective toward Tito. Jerzy Morawski backed the attack. Janos Kadar defended Nagy and 1956 leaders.
One person was hospitalized at Childress General Hospital after a collision between a car driven by Alwyn Lee Gilliam and a dump truck driven by Watson Johnson eight miles north of Childress on Highway 83 about 11:20 a.m. Gilliam, 81, suffered a bone chip in his shoulder and was checked for other injuries. both drivers received tickets. Damage to both vehicles was considerable.
Fiddlers of all ages may enter the 18th Old Settlers Fiddlers Contest in Hot el Childress ballroom from 8 a.m. to 10 30 a.m. Friday July 18. Chairmen Frank Ehrie and J E Shackelford invite entrants and rules will be released soon in The Index per President T R Whitehead.
