President Eisenhower meets with Sherman Adams and Dillon Anderson at the Gettysburg farmhouse to discuss politics and foreign aid as he plans a possible news conference this week. A downtown Gettysburg office is expected to open, accelerating his work pace.
US Vice President Richard M Nixon met in Karachi with Pakistan President Iskander Mirza during his Asia tour. He described a very concentrated discussion on economic aid and military ties and said he would relay Pakistani views to President Eisenhower and the National Security Council.
Sam Miller, longtime manager of Cameron Lumber yard, accepted a post with Oil Capital Lumber and Supply Company in Tulsa. The Cameron yard will close as the Millers relocate around the month's start. Miller has 26 years at Cameron before 1950, then ran a yard in Amarillo until 1955, returned to Childress to manage Cameron, and now moves with civic roles as Lions Club officer and Chamber director.
Directors of the Greenbelt Bowl Inc meet at 2 30 oclock Tuesday in the Chamber of Commerce directors room. W E Eubank reports advisory committee members will join. Present directors include Bert Hargrave Jack Fox Charles Rogers Larry Lawrence Ellis Martha Siler Alyeon Ater Buddy Wilcoxson and representatives of the American Legion and VFW. The advisory board members are Eubank Lawrence Wilcoxson Morris Higley Dalton Sartrells W T Nelson Troy Collins and Dr Bob Jones.
Preston Darwin Smith a retired farmer died at his home 505 Avenue C Northwest Sunday night at 8 15 oClock He was 79 born in Bastrop County October 7 1877 Funeral arrangements are incomplete with Newberry Funeral Home Survivors include two daughters Mrs Roe Riddell of Modesto Calif and Mrs Billie Jean Dun of Sacramento Calif
A storm line over northern Texas and toward Lubbock produced at least four tornadoes with hail and dust, while temperatures surged past 107 degrees in Dallas and Fort Worth. Gainesville suffered fires and high winds with a mattress factory burned, and a tornado funnel was reported but not touching ground. damages occurred but no deaths reported.
Severe Sunday storm brought winds over 83 mph and heavy damage across Carey ChilDress and nearby farm areas. Roof loss at E T Pistole home, blown fences at Carvy Drive-In, and damaged barns, poles, and unroofed out-buildings reported. In Childress, many TV towers toppled, windows shattered at several businesses, with electrical services affected.
Federal mediation officials prepared to move to break the contract deadlock that halted 87 percent of U S steel output for nine days. US Steel vice president John A Stephens and United Steelworkers leaders showed no new bargaining. Finnegan said talks could resume by his initiative with McDonald and negotiators summoned as needed.
A sharp earthquake in the Aegean Sea caused death and destruction on Santoria and Ios. At least 40 killed, with many injured, and a 12 foot tidal wave damaging Kaymnos port facilities. Greek officials call it a major catastrophe, the worst since 1953.
Congress pushes toward a possible final two weeks of the current session. House debates a $4.014 billion foreign aid package and a $3.4 billion related program likely to spark a floor fight. Senate leadership aims to move the compromise aid bill this week. Some expect adjournment around July 21, others as late as August 4.
The annual stockholders meeting of Childress Industrial Corporation is set for 7 30 p m tomorrow at City Hall. Secretary Russell Jones urges attendance or proxy mail ins as a majority is required for the meeting. Officers for the coming year will be elected. The firm owns the building now rented by Ford Metal Moulding Company.
Two local Jaycees Andy Rogers and Larry Lawrence attended a summer Tri Regional meeting in Lubbock. Rogers was named parliamentarian and Lawrence served on the Travel Trophy committee and as secretary for the Club Presidents Clinic. Amarillo won the bid for the winter Tri Regional meeting, edging Childress which also bid.
Advance tickets for the 1956 Greenbelt Bowl football game on August 17 are on sale at the Chamber of Commerce office. Season ticket holders for the Bobcat game have seats reserved until Thursday, July 19. Advance seats cost $1.75, with a $2 price after Wednesday, August 15.
Senator Humphrey called on the Senate to revive the failed 1.6B school construction bill defeated in the House. Senator Lehman backed the move as Labor Committee members study chances for Senate approval. They blamed Republicans for the House defeat, noting 75 Republicans vs 119 Democrats on final roll. Senator Case countered that passage was not possible.
The Chil dress of C BCD voted not to join any highway group after a swindle in the name of the Highway 287 Association. Tom Manning and the board discussed rescinding the decision at the next meeting. Manning said the scam spread across towns along the route from Port Arthur to Yellowstone. the thief remains at large. The association counts over 700 members with Ray Hoskins as president and Worth Coffee Texas director.
George Parr, a Texas political boss, announced support for several state candidates, but most balked. Sen. Price Daniel, Ben Ramsey, Jesse James, and Judge Morrison reportedly welcomed Parr's backing, while Daniel rejected any contact and Ross Carlton declined until Parr's stance is clear. Carlton vowed to welcome Parr's support for his opponents if offered.
Chicago Democrats huddle to choose the keynote for the national convention on August 13. Nine leaders are under consideration with Sen Henry M Jackson and Sen Robert S Kerr among likely choices. Final decision expected at the arrangements committee meeting chaired by Paul Butler.
