Band Director Tunnell Resigns From Childress to Breckenridge

John Tunnell, Childress school system band director for five years, resigns effective 1977 78 to take a similar post at Breckenridge. He thanks students, ex students and the community, praising their motivation and the Big Blue Band spirit from Bobcat Land. He notes his wife will also work in Breckenridge.

Local Happenings June Rain Totals Show Above Average

June brought 4.22 inches of rain at the FAA station totaling 14.65 inches for six months. Childress’s yearly average is 21.81 inches with several days of measurable moisture in June. First Monday Bargain Day will be moved to July 11 due to the Fourth of July holiday.

Ritchie Rites In Quanah Quanch Funeral Services Held

Funeral services for Mrs. Delmer Ritchie of Quanah were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Quanah First Baptist Church. Burial followed in Quanah cemetery after her death at Chillicothe hospital. Survivors include her husband, one daughter, and a nephew Gordon Graviey of Childress.

Local teen held in homicide case in Childress County

An 18 year old man named Paul Eugene Conley is in custody at Childress County Jail on a homicide charge. Authorities in Lawrenceville Georgia allege his involvement in the death of an elderly man. Deputies and city police arrested him after a tip from Gwinnett County officials.

Butler Clinic Deed Transferred To Childress Hospital District

The deed to the Butler Clinic was delivered to the Childress County Hospital District as the drive to attract new physicians continues. The Medical Crisis Committee reports completing its second phase with the deed delivery and notes ongoing fundraising for repairs, remodeling, and future expansion. About $32,000 has been raised as supporters list numerous individuals and local businesses as contributors.

Caution Urged On Highways During July Holidays

Sgt. Paul Clanton of the Texas DPS in Childress urges motorists to drive carefully as July Fourth traffic is expected to rise. In June the six-county area logged 28 accidents with two fatalities in Foard and Wilbarger counties. Troopers logged 25 000 miles, issued 1 100 traffic summons including 23 DWI, and 30 assist incidents. Statewide deaths reached 1 526 for the year, up from 1 441 last year. The speed limit extension for 120 days begins July 19, the 12th extension since 1973.

James Bennie Turner 21 of Hollister Florida was charged with murder in the stabbing death of Kim Michael Grant 20 of Florissant Missouri. Grant was found in a Wichita Falls Holiday Inn bathtub as investigators link an interstate narcotics ring spanning Wichita Falls St Louis Florissant Pittsfield Hollister and Palatka. Turner surrendered earlier with bond set at 50000 as authorities continue probe with Missouri Florida Illinois and air base investigators joining Wichita Falls Police.

Walker Rites Here Saturday

Funeral services for Garry Akard Walker 79 were held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Newberry Funeral Chapel with J. R. Chism officiating. Burial followed in Childress Cemetery. Mr Walker died Thursday night in a Wellington nursing home after a long illness. He was born October 4, 1897 in Boyd Texas and moved to Childress in 1907. He was a World War I veteran and member of several veterans groups. He worked as a switchman for Fort Worth and Denver from 1918 to 1958. He married Elizabeth Lea Delaney on April 3, 1920 in Childress. Survivors include three brothers and three sisters.
