Israeli soldiers in Gaza fired after a grenade attack that missed them and set a jeep ablaze, injuring an Arab boy and girl near the A Shatti refugee camp. A second incident caused a small bus blast with no injuries en route from Bethlehem to Jerusalem.
Sadat told Le Figaro he expects U S recognition of the PLO and said Washington can press Israel toward accepting the Palestinians. He spoke as he planned a France visit to discuss arms purchases and a regional role for the U S.
Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger argued in Newsweek that the United States cannot back talks with the PLO until it recognizes Israel as a legitimate state. He warned that PLO proposals envisage destroying Israel in some form.

The House Ways and Means Committee tied a 90 day oil tariff pause to raising the federal debt limit to 531 billion. The panel voted 15 14 to merge the measures and 19 15 to approve the package, with a Ford veto possible if enacted.
The AP report from Springfield Illinois notes supermarkets use needle tenderizing to improve grass fed and lean beef. Price pressures from grain raise demand for cheaper cuts. USDA grades may be lower. Sharpened needles disrupt fibers without altering the meat’s surface appearance.

A powerful fragmentation bomb exploded near Fraunces Tavern and the Anglers and Tarpon Club in Manhattan, killing four and injuring at least 42. The FALN claimed responsibility, linking the blast to Puerto Rican nationalist aims. Names of victims included James Gezork and Frank T. Conner among others.

Stranik, mechanical superintendent for Fort Worth and Denver in Childress for five years, is transferred to Denver Colorado as regional mechanical superintendent effective February 1. He will be replaced by Ivan F E Orthengren who arrives from Lincoln Nebraska with wife and three children. Stranik came to Childress from Spokane Washington on April 1 1971.
The Texas Highway Department awarded two paving bids in Childress. Gilvin Terrill Inc of Amarillo won 405 594 for Avenue I in North Childress, while Ivan Dement Inc of Amarillo won 218 157 for the new Airport Road. The Avenue I project covers 2.1 miles from FM 2530 to US 83 and includes widening to 52 feet with hot mix asphalt. Completion target is early fall with work order expected mid February and 150 working days for the contractor. The Airport Road project covers 2.4 miles from US 287 west of Childress to Spur 164, creating a 20 foot rural asphalt surface without curbs.
Former Southwestern Bell executive Jim Monk testified to SEC investigators that the company distorted data to win rate increases in Texas. He outlined how the Tyler case served as a nationwide gauge and said rate bases were inflated to conceal higher earnings. He also described purchases aimed at swaying approvals and noted his 1967 forced resignation without severance.
Officials push to make the Childress County Youth Project Show the biggest and best yet. The event runs Friday and Saturday at the Bus Barn and Fair Park Auditorium with seven divisions including science foods needle work clothing hobbies handicrafts and farm mechanics. Entrants are organized by division by Ronny McNutt the county agricultural agent with Don Reeves judging livestock and Bill Hubbard and Stanley Terry supervising swine and beef. Open to FFA FHA 4 H and other area youth.
