Year end look at Childress County happenings in 1958 covers big headlines from a gas price war and four cent stamps to wheat crops, Parkview Homes, and dam efforts. It notes a murder, suicides, and building, with month by month detail from January to February.
Garland W. Byars manager of the gas company at Paducah and Estelline died suddenly of a heart attack while hunting with his grandsons near Paducah Saturday afternoon. Services set for 2 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church Paducah, burial there. Byars was a member of Knights of Pythias Paducah and DOKK Temple groups in Childress and Paducah and active in lodge work.
Geraldine Rea, daughter of Mr and Mrs Ernest Rea of Plainview, is among contributors to Wayland Literary Magazine at Wayland Baptist College. The 1958 59 issue features her original short story Swampland. The publication showcases student stories poems and art and is edited by Alice Sinewart with Jan Cornebise supervising art.
United States satellite plans call for an atom powered radio and instruments to reach orbit in 1960. Nuclear rockets for American satellites and space probes are not anticipated for at least five more years. A single atomic power plant for satellite instruments is scheduled for ground tests this year and likely a further year before flight testing.
The Texas State Health Department reported 3,628 tuberculosis cases in 1958, up from 1,552 cases the previous year, with data released Saturday.

Anita Meyers a University of Texas student from Childress joins Phi Sigma Alpha an honorary government fraternity as a first year law student. She is daughter of Mr and Mrs O F Meyers of 1208 K Northwest.
A tar pot exploded in a downtown alley in the 300 block Saturday at about 11 30 am. Firemen said one end of the fuel tank blew out causing tar to spill and ignite but no injuries or other damage occurred. Some repair work was underway to a nearby office root.
The Ninth Annual Greenbelt Junior Breeders Show in Childress lists awards set for January 17. Entries already come from Wheeler Motley Hall and Briscoe counties, with judging banners by West Texas Gin Company manager Joe Liles and a champion steer trophy by Bill Bradley. Show barn open January 16–18. exhibits due by 8 am January 17. Dr. Robert Jones as General Chairman. Bill Moore leads livestock. Truman Kidwell heads judging contests. judge W. E. Steele Jr. from Graham. Open to all 4-H and FFA members statewide.
Moscow urged a conference of World War II allies to discuss a German peace treaty uniting East and West Germany as a demilitarized state with all foreign troops removed. Aimed at creating a demilitarized free West Berlin until unification with Prague or Warsaw to host talks within two months. East and West Germany would be barred from nuclear weapons and military alliances, and NATO or Warsaw Pact ties would end.
A Tulsa couple, Mr. and Mrs. S F Flores, donated 27 sections of West Texas farm land totaling 17 176 acres to Wayland Baptist College in Plainview Texas The gift valued at over 2 million dollars creates a permanent endowment fund upon the donors deaths and is described by Wayland officials as one of the largest individual gifts to Christian education.
Police recovered another coin dispenser Saturday after it was stolen earlier in the week. A rack belonging to Bob Ray was found in a field on the Harry Mitchell farm north of the city, according to Chief Alvis Maddox. Five were stolen locally and several at Quanah that night.
A regular School Board meeting is scheduled for 7:30 Monday at the school administrative office.

Ben Ramsey opens the Senate and Secretary of State Zollie Steakley begins the House session amid a bitter speakership battle between Waggoner Carr and Joe Burkett Jr. The state faces a $167 million two year funding gap, with Gov. Price Daniel projecting $175 million to $185 million needed for the next biennium to cover spending and erase the revenue deficit.
Gov. Price Daniel endorsed in principle a Texas party registration law and urged a three point program to ensure majority decisions in elections and conventions. He spoke at a joint meeting of the State Democratic Executive Committee and Democratic county chairmen, with SDEC action anticipated later. The program would base county delegate strength to the state convention on total Democratic primary votes for governor in nonpresidential years.
Plans for the Carey Homecoming scheduled for March 28 will be completed at a meeting in the community house tomorrow evening at 7 30 Ex students of the school were asked to be present.
A wildcat oil test north of Childress is being moved to the site and drilling will start within a week. The test will be in Section 11, Block 9 H and GN Survey and drilled to 6,500 feet in the Ellenberger sand. Farmout from Phillips Petroleum, drilled by Jack Grace Drilling Company of Wichita Falls.

Federal Judge orders the Little Rock School Board to begin steps within 30 days to reinstate four closed high schools. Board members disagree on how and when to comply with the order, with talks of attorneys and potential special meetings.
Fidel Castro indicated gambling houses will reopen at Havana tourist hotels but only for tourists with proper credentials. He warned Cuban nationals may not gamble while American owners have fled or hid to avoid the crackdown. Casino operators welcomed the relaxation as Batista era loosens.
