Bomb Threat Sparks Civil Rights Protests at Fisk University

A bomb threat evacuated about 120 female students from Fisk University in Nashville, heightening the week’s demonstrations over segregated dining. Police found no explosives as leaders like Rev. Cordy Tindell Vivian and Fisk President Stephen J. Wright urged restraint and continued sit-ins amid broader Southern protests.

Pioneer of County Dies In California

Long time resident Mrs. Jessie Alverson 76 wife of William A. Alverson died in El Monte California after a three week illness. She had visited daughters Mrs. Burl Mullins and Mrs. Loren Austin and had been in poor health about three years. Survivors include five daughters Mrs. Mullins Mrs. Austin Mrs. Michael Dzambi Mrs. Bill Collins Mrs. Robert Riker a son H W Alverson a sister Mrs A F E Stephens and a brother A G Hargrave.

Gresham Rites In Floydada For Former Carey Coach

Funeral services were held at Floydada First Methodist Church for L. F Fate Gresham a former Carey resident and Floydada coach. He died of a heart attack in a truck on his Floydada farm. Survived by wife Diana daughter Pam mother and siblings. Burial followed in Floydada Cemetery.

Students Return After Illness Weather Delays In City

Students resumed classes on schedule after illness and weather delays last Wednesday. Absenteeism appears down in most city schools and the term will not be affected, ending May 24. Public School Week features a daily 3 05 p m radio broadcast by Nellie Kennedy's class and the 2nd annual Science Fair at Fair Park Auditorium Friday.

Special Meeting Of School Board Tonight

The School Board will meet at 7 30 tonight at the School Administrative Office to discuss further study of the School Survey Committee recommendations. Several other items will be discussed and photos will be taken for the high school yearbook.

Melvin Purvis Found Dead In Florence Home

Florence police report Melvin Purvis a famed FBI man who hunted John Dillinger shot himself today at his Florence residence. He died en route to the hospital with a .45 pistol found at the scene. Purvis aged about 56 was described by his physician as in bad health and despondent. He had lived in Florence after a Washington D C law practice and ran radio station WOLS.

Snow Falls Across South Plains and Panhandle Texas

Snow and freezing rain spread across the South Plains and Panhandle as a new cold air mass moved in Texas. Temperatures plunged into the teens in Dalhart Amarillo and Lubbock while coastal stations reached up to 59 degrees at Brownsville.

Family Courses To Be Held At Wilson School

A series of Tuesday night study courses on Home and The Family will be held from 7 to 9 PM at Wilson School. The first session covers How to Study with H A Powers on March 1 followed by Mental Health by A Sanders March 8 Home Relations by Charles Reynolds March 15 and Our Health by Mrs Mary Scott March 22. Film strips and printed data will be used and a nursery will be provided for children.

Absenteeism Drops in Local Schools

Attendance in local schools improved with a total of 148 absentees, 102 fewer than last Wednesday when 275 were missing due to flu and bad weather. Absentees by site included 41 at the high school 36 at Junior High 39 at Wilson 11 at East Ward and 16 at Robert E Lee.

Zack Cowart Collier 76 died at 7 50 am in Childress General Hospital after several days illness. He lived on Collier Ranch south of Hulver near Estelline and had a second home at 2422 Washington Amarillo. Survived by wife Annie two sons William T Collier Childress and Jackson Collier Laurel Miss and three daughters Mary Allman Amarillo Laura Chapman Odessa Ruth Sherrod Lubbock.

Cotton Meeting Set for Tuesday

Local cotton growers were reminded today by County Agent Chile Smith of the free cotton meeting scheduled for 7 30 p m Tuesday in district courtroom where a group of cotton experts will preside. Mrs. Margaret Moore an employee at Hotel Childress fell in the lobby this morning. She rested at home this afternoon and medical examination found no broken bones though a pinched nerve was noted.

Thor Blasts Off on Third Test Flight From Cape Canaveral

The Thor “Hot Rod” space rocket booster soared in to the sky from Florida on its third test flight. The planned flight covers about 1,700 miles over the Atlantic. The slender rocket, heavier than the standard Thor now on defense duty in England, left a brilliant white vapor trail through cold air.

Defense rests in case of Dutchman Van Rie

The defense rested in the Willem Van Rie murder trial after police stenographer William Shanahan testified. Medical examiner Dr Milton Helpern argued the injuries could not have been from beating, while pathologist notes supported an accidental drowning scenario. Van Rie admitted intimacies with Lynn Kauffman during their 44 day voyage from Singapore but denied meeting her the night she died.
