National Guardsmen, about 300 strong, moved into Santa Barbara after four days of disturbances near the University of California, Santa Barbara. Police officers were forced to retreat as demonstrators clashed with night patrols and caused property damage.
U S Command reports the largest number of Viet Cong shelling attacks in almost a month and three aircraft losses. Allied tallies show 16 American and five South Vietnamese dead, 29 Americans and 16 Vietnamese wounded, plus 44 enemy casualties. Ground fighting remained light as 35 rocket and mortar attacks occurred in 24 hours.
An oil slick from a freighter collision fouled the St Johns River eight miles from the collision off Dames Point threatening a $1 million wildlife breeding grounds. Coast Guard and state officials report birds turning black and traffic halted while crews work to contain the spill.
Clouds and rising temperatures spread over Texas as warm Gulf air moves inland. Early fog near the coast gave way to a warmer day with highs reaching 60s and 70s, and a 73 degree reading in Brownsville. Forecasters expect a cool spell Tuesday with a chance of rain in the north.
Federal grand jury in San Antonio hears two hours of testimony from Rep. W. S. Heatly amid an investigation into pressure surrounding his North Texas District 80 race. The probe, started Feb. 10, will reconvene March 10 with about seven or eight more witnesses. Heatly, 57, long a top Texas House figure and chair of the Appropriations Committee, seeks a ninth term as a Democrat in a district facing its first Republican challenger since 1964.
The Swiss federal Supreme Court upholds the U S Justice Departments right to access secret Swiss bank files linked to a multimillion dollar fraud against the U S government. Zurich banker Hans Senn and another Swiss official faced Swiss inquiries as the United States convicted two Americans for funneling 3 3 million through protected accounts.
Swiss police reported two Amman men, Kaddoumi Sufian and Mussa Jawher, sought by West Germany for bombing a Swissair crash follow up. They crossed into Switzerland in a cream car with German plates. The Austrian Cara ville jet bomb detonated in Frankfurt baggage and all aboard escaped. The Swissair jet crashed after takeoff from Zurich, 47 dead.
Washington AP The House Rules Committee narrowly sidetracked a bid to open a desegregation inquiry. The split within the Education and Labor Committee centered on Edith Green seeking a special panel, threatening education legislation prospects.
New York AP reports a 12 year old heroin addict named Ralph de Jesus testifies at a drug hearing. He describes starting drugs a year ago after seeing a friend and selling drugs at his school for two dollars per bag. He says he learned to inject in his street neighborhood and now speaks plainly about his addiction.
Sixteen political candidates are to speak at the Jaycee Political Rally at 7 30 p m today in the junior high auditorium Mrs Avis Bailey Democratic candidate for County Treasurer and Clarence Carter will be master of ceremonies The rally is sponsored as a public service by the Jaycees.
The Senate moved the 19.4 billion HEW appropriations bill to debate with disputes over slower school desegregation and new spending controls aimed at preventing a second Nixon veto. The Appropriations Committee backed an amendment allowing a 2 percent Nixon veto cut.
Vice President Spiro T. Agnew urged governors to lead a national effort to push books misfits and extreme elements from front pages and TV screens. He warned of a threat of violent revolution and called for a return to normalcy through leadership from political business and academic figures.
One of the largest Childress parades in years will start Saturday at 1 p.m. as part of the Childress Jaycees Texas Independence Day Celebration. Trophies will be awarded in four categories band riding clubs antique autos and floats with Ed Leary as master of ceremonies and judges Mrs E E Smith John Forbis James Icenhower and James Barnett. The event features West Texas State University Angel Corps and Amarillo's Longhorn Antique Auto as parade attractions.
Blue blazers with matching ties will be worn by Ambassadors Club members after a morning meeting. A color committee was formed to pick colors and an emblem, to report next week. Walter Lockhoof, Glenn Buckley, and Earl Preston will serve, Buckley as secretary. Ed Leary is president, John Forbis vice president, Preston treasurer. 21 members joined. The club sent congratulations to the Quanah Indians and urged others to join via the Chamber of Commerce.
