Illness sweeps City offices with 13 to 14 staff absent from flu and weakness after recent seizures. Police and city crews work reduced shifts as Chief Maddox and Assistant Chief Darnell struggle with weakness. School dismissals extend into Monday with 275 absent students amid weather and illness.
Stranded motorists and residents enjoyed a short break from severe weather and icy roads late yesterday, but were warned of renewed conditions tonight and tomorrow. The Highway Department said roads stayed open and free of ice, while the FAA reported no extra moisture. At 11:30 a.m. the thermometer showed 23 degrees as locals cautiously resumed travel or stayed home.

Six representatives attended the Memphis Chamber of Commerce meeting on Thursday evening and two at Vernon’s annual gathering. At the Memphis banquet Delbert Downing of Midland Chamber spoke. attendees included Doyle McKinney Alex Saied John Herren Lou's Sally and M. K. Wilcoxson. Jeff Henderson and Paul Ord joined Vernon’s event with Arthur A. Smith of Dallas First National Bank as guest speaker.
The Air Ministry said a big U S Navy plane likely caused a collision with a Brazilian DC-3 over Sugarloaf Mountain killing 61. Survivors included Lt. George P. Fitzgibbons and two others. Eisenhower and Kubitschek visited the injured as the two crashes raised alarm over Latin American air security.
Light snow fell in Amarillo and Diabart as a fresh cold front moved in. Forecasters warned the cold wave would not be as severe as last week. A passerby mistook rising steam from the roof of the Larkin Wallis rental at 380 E Sc for smoke and phoned in a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived but found no fire or trace of flames at the scene.
Mrs. C. D. Bradshaw 72 of Slaton died at 6 pm Thursday at her home. Funeral at 10 am Saturday at Acuff Baptist Church, with graveside services at 4 pm Saturday in Childress cemetery. Survivors include husband two sons three daughters and many relatives.

An Alitalia DC7 bound for New York exploded near takeoff at Shannon Airport, killing 27 and leaving 23 survivors.
