The Texas Forest Service warned of manpower shortages as 11 counties battled a 10000 acre blaze across Tom Green Schleicher and Manard counties with aerial surveys showing containment but ongoing flames.

A tanker hit the Benjamin Harrison Bridge near Hopewell sending a 150 foot span section into the James. Four cars toppled into the river and divers searched the water as authorities, Coast Guard, and witnesses described the chaotic scene. At least two drivers escaped, others unaccounted. The ship was empty and en route to Newport News. the bridge, built in 1967, connects Hopewell and Charles City County and remained open to traffic only on one side while barriers blocked the approach.
