Helen Pryor assumes management of the cafe at 103 Commerce Avenue, taking over from Al Meta's and Harry's. Pryor, formerly with the Famous Pit, took charge last Monday and plans menu changes while stressing affordable prices for workers and long-time customers. She brings several years of experience in fine foods.
The annual meeting of Security Investment Corporation will be held at 10 a.m. on March 3 as announced by secretary James Eddy. The firm owns Childress assets and Annie Ruth Bell serves as president of the corporation.
A gunman described as a gifted marksman attacked near Chalkhill Pennsylvania. Daniel Raymond 42 held off state police with rifle fire killing William Burd and wounding Lawrence Swenglish while three others were reported dead. Troopers and townspeople surrounded the Raymond home but could not breach the area. Raymond reportedly had a history of trouble and family members left the scene after a dispute.
Snow and illness forced most Childress area schools to close or dismiss early with 255 students out and buses returning by 1 p.m. Roads remained open but slick in spots as winds drove a three inch snowfall. Highways stayed passable though hazardous with no major crashes yet reported. Agricultural activity continued, wheat stands improving with warmer weather expected.
A legal notice states no change in basic long distance rates by Southwestern Bell Telephone Company serving the Childress Exchange. The pricing system for toll calls is being changed but basic rates remain intact.
President Eisenhower arrived in Rio de Janeiro on the eve of carnival to a record welcome. Confetti rains and banners stretched across 12 story buildings as crowds surged along the docks and streets. Brazilian and U.S. flags fluttered while 12 Brazilian warships fired 21 gun salutes and planes roared overhead.
The Childress Bobcats, District 5AA and GAAA champions, depart Friday noon for Lubbock to begin the Regional Basketball Tournament. They face the Dimmitt Bobcats, who beat Abernathy 65 to 44, with a 12:30 p.m. Saturday tip. Coach Paul Hatem notes a practice session Friday afternoon and a Friday night Texas Tech vs Texas A&M game as guests.
The clean-up basketball games set for tomorrow night at the High School gym are postponed. They are rescheduled for Thursday night March 8. Admission will be a bar of soap for students and a towel for adults.
Tom L Hardin the first president of the Childress Rotary Club spoke at the club meeting. At the close of his talk he received an honorary membership. The club was chartered in May 1921 with 25 original members. J H Jernigan and J M Preston remain active. Hardin noted water as a core issue for the area. Morris Higley arranged the program with George Holland of Lubbock as a visiting Rotarian. Guests included Leon Robinson of Childress and E L Byrd of Dallas.
A parishioner told the Rev Reginald Tayner his sermons were dull and the minister promised to improve. The blunt critic was his 6 year old son Robert who spoke up in Walthamstow England on Tuesday.
City police officers Jerry Ingram Henry Storm and Ler Roy Hicks have been out with flu for several days leaving three men short. Storm worked until 3 am and will return later today Ingram plans a 9 30 pm to midnight shift while relieving Hicks at 8 30 am and the note urges drivers to be careful on icy streets.
Gov Price Daniel expanded the Texas Industrial Commission naming Morris Higley publisher of The Childress Index among new appointees. E B Germany remains chairman and several new members from across the state join to push industrial growth and higher funding.
City police investigated three weather related traffic accidents in Ponca City area. One incident involved Charlie Guire of Quanah rear ending Kert Dishman at a traffic light on Avenue F. James Morris of Amarillo received a ticket after his car hit Frank Webl of Amarillo stopped at Highway 83 and 287. A third crash in the 900 block of Avenue C left Mrs Opa Brandon of Childress with a broken window when her car overturned on loose gravel. no injuries reported.
Detroit story reports Nelle Lassiter 38 Posed as mastermind with alleged lover Gordon Watson 44 in the murder of Parvin Lassiter 38. Three men in the trial paused as Lassiter and Watson face charges. six more conspirators named in warrants.
A Texas snowstorm disrupted travel from Dalhart to Dallas Fort Worth area with 2 to 6 inches in Lubbock and 3 inches in parts of the Panhandle. Temperatures dropped to single digits, schools closed, and the Highway Department warned travel hazardous as more snow was forecast through Thursday. Lightning-quick ice and sleet damaged roads from Kerrville to San Antonio, while East Texas reported a sharp freeze and Henderson endured an ice storm with power outages.
