Expert Rifleman Goes On Killing Spree Near Uniontown

A gunman described as a gifted marksman attacked near Chalkhill Pennsylvania. Daniel Raymond 42 held off state police with rifle fire killing William Burd and wounding Lawrence Swenglish while three others were reported dead. Troopers and townspeople surrounded the Raymond home but could not breach the area. Raymond reportedly had a history of trouble and family members left the scene after a dispute.

Snow Strikes Texas Schools Closing Buses Early

Snow and illness forced most Childress area schools to close or dismiss early with 255 students out and buses returning by 1 p.m. Roads remained open but slick in spots as winds drove a three inch snowfall. Highways stayed passable though hazardous with no major crashes yet reported. Agricultural activity continued, wheat stands improving with warmer weather expected.

Eisenhower Welcomed by Riotous Rio Carnival Crowd

President Eisenhower arrived in Rio de Janeiro on the eve of carnival to a record welcome. Confetti rains and banners stretched across 12 story buildings as crowds surged along the docks and streets. Brazilian and U.S. flags fluttered while 12 Brazilian warships fired 21 gun salutes and planes roared overhead.

Bobcats Head to Regional Basketball Tourney in Lubbock

The Childress Bobcats, District 5AA and GAAA champions, depart Friday noon for Lubbock to begin the Regional Basketball Tournament. They face the Dimmitt Bobcats, who beat Abernathy 65 to 44, with a 12:30 p.m. Saturday tip. Clean Up Games Postponed to March 3 at Local High School

The clean-up basketball games set for tomorrow night at the High School gym are postponed. They are rescheduled for Thursday night March 8. Admission will be a bar of soap for students and a towel for adults.

Talk Given To Rotary by Tom L Hardin

Tom L Hardin the first president of the Childress Rotary Club spoke at the club meeting. At the close of his talk he received an honorary membership. The club was chartered in May 1921 with 25 original members. J H Jernigan and J M Preston remain active. Hardin noted water as a core issue for the area. Morris Higley arranged the program with George Holland of Lubbock as a visiting Rotarian. Guests included Leon Robinson of Childress and E L Byrd of Dallas.

Three Accidents Investigated By City Police

City police investigated three weather related traffic accidents in Ponca City area. One incident involved Charlie Guire of Quanah rear ending Kert Dishman at a traffic light on Avenue F. James Morris of Amarillo received a ticket after his car hit Frank Webl of Amarillo stopped at Highway 83 and 287. A third crash in the 900 block of Avenue C left Mrs Opa Brandon of Childress with a broken window when her car overturned on loose gravel. no injuries reported.

Texas Snowstorm Paralyzes Roads Across Panhandle to Dallas

A Texas snowstorm disrupted travel from Dalhart to Dallas Fort Worth area with 2 to 6 inches in Lubbock and 3 inches in parts of the Panhandle. Temperatures dropped to single digits, schools closed, and the Highway Department warned travel hazardous as more snow was forecast through Thursday.
