South Vietnamese forces entering Laos to disrupt North Vietnamese supply lines faced heavy losses as a ranger position guarding a trail artery was overrun. Two nearby patrol bases remained besieged for a third day. Field reports tallied over 50 Saigon troops killed and 200+ wounded with 26 missing. North Vietnamese casualties were put at about 600 in the onslaught backed by U S air support.

U.S. Reports Attacks Near Khe Sanh and North Vietnam

The U.S. Command details two artillery attacks on positions north of Khe Sanh on the Vietnamese side of the border, confirming two helicopters lost, five Americans killed, 14 wounded and three missing. Colonel Melvin N. Glantz announced the mandatory retirement of Dalton T. Chick Northcutt of Silverton from Local Board No. 2 in Childress. He turned 75 on February 17, 1971 after twenty two and a half years of service, under the Draft Law rules.

Historic marker plans discussed by Childress group

Mrs E E Gene Smith was named vice chair of the Childress County Historical Survey Committee at a special Friday meeting. The group discussed marker plans for the courthouse square listing the first settlers and a marker at the site of old Childress west of the current town location.

Community members with information guides for the Childress and Childress County history project are urged to submit soon or pick up a guide at The Childress Index. A deadline for family histories will be set within three weeks. Extensive Wichita Falls narcotics raid begins

More than 200 city state and federal officers launched the most extensive narcotics raids in Wichita Falls history at 1 am. They charged 89 persons under narcotics and drug statutes after eight months of undercover work. By 3 30 am more than 50 prisoners were booked. Readi Rain System Meeting Set for Monday in Courthouse

Teenagers Charged In Murder Near Fredericksburg

Three Houston area teens were charged with murder in the kidnap slaying of San Antonio woman Gaynell Newsom. Newsom, 61, disappeared from her San Antonio home Friday and was found dead in a ravine 14 miles south of Fredericksburg beside Texas 16. A shotgun wound to the neck was reported. Arrests were made in Ozona, more than 200 miles northwest of San Antonio, following the discovery of the crime.

VFW District 13 Opens Spring Convention Activities

Registration for the District 13 Veterans of Foreign Wars convention began yesterday at the Veterans Building and runs through today. The event features the dedication of the Veterans Building with a historical marker at 1 30 p.m. today. More than 100 people are expected to register, and the public is invited.

Mrs. W. K. Myers 46 sister of a local resident died suddenly Saturday morning in her Houston home. Funeral arrangements were not known at presstime. She was sister of Mrs. Pete Kinney Childress and Ray Loftis Paducah. She was aunt of Mrs. Bill Leonard Childress.
