Senate leaders expect about two thirds of the chamber to approve a bill raising congressional salaries by 7500 annually and granting proportional increases for federal judges. The measure, set for Monday afternoon, contrasts with a House version that would lift pay to 25 000 and adds mileage for travel.
Senators Lyndon B. Johnson and Price Daniel and Representative Walter Rogers endorsed a two-in ard two-out cotton planting plan for Childress County. Farm Bureau President Ernest Rea said they would press the Agriculture Department to permit this method, arguing it reduces wind erosion and eases row equipment use versus the prior four-by-four practice. Copies of the letter were sent to nearby Farm Bureaus.
County Agent W. E. Hafner said the 4 H grass judging team finished seventh at the Fatstock Show in San Antonio after missing one grass. May bank's FFA team won with 1199 points. Local boys A. V. King led the team with Bobby Riker second high, joined by Gerald Wakefield Earl Willard and Charles Holman.
The Texas House gave final approval to a bill banning lewd, depraved or corruptive comic books. Rep. Joe Pool led passage by voice vote and it heads to the Senate. Penalties include up to six months in jail and a $1000 fine for sale or distribution.
A rain belt moved north through Texas Monday easing the season’s severe cold. Dalhart dropped to 2 degrees while cloudiness spread statewide with only West Texas escaping heavy clouds. Light showers were noted in South Central Texas and the north portion of East Texas with rain likely Monday afternoon. early precipitation totals and low temperatures from Dalhart to Brownsville are listed.
About 200 local Red Cross volunteers, honored for five to forty years of service, gathered at the Woman's Department Club. Top honorees were Mrs. W. E. Davis and Mrs. F. L. Taylor for forty years. National guests included Mrs. Loretta Webb and Miss Hazel Heywood. A Boy Scout artificial respiration demonstration and home nursing demonstrations complemented the event.

Riots broke out during Mardi Gras revelry in the French Quarter of New Orleans on February 21. Police used tear gas to restore order as about 100 people were arrested and six injured in incidents at St Peter Street Pat O Briens and Dixie's Bar of Music. The disturbance began when a suspected auto thief proclaimed he was a federal agent prompting the crowd to riot.
Cub Scout Pack 61 sponsored by Childress Elks Lodge will host a Blue and Gold banquet on Tuesday March 1 at Hotel Childress. Cubmaster Ed die McConnell reports a safety and sharp shooting exhibition by the Texas State Safety Department. A follow up meeting for all pack members and parents is set for Thursday at 7 at Central Christian Church to distribute tickets.
Taipai reports Nationalist warplanes bombed invasion concentrations on Taishan Island, with nonstop raids for four days. Submarine activity is noted in the Formosa Strait as 11 subs sighted near the strait and refueling reports argue from Pearl River to Hongkong. Nationalist pilots claim large fuel-dumps destroyed and heavy Communist casualties with 10 ships sunk in air raids over the weekend.
A series of explosions rocked the submarine Pomodon at Hunters Point Naval Shipyard in San Francisco killing two sailors, injuring four, and leaving three missing presumed dead. Firefighters evacuated and treated others as smoke inhalation and hydrogen fumes halted rescue efforts.
The Lions Club sets its regular gathering for Wednesday at noon replacing Tuesday. President Chester Hufstetler announced the date change so the club can hear Dr. DeGroot of Texas Christian University.
Rescue crews at Needle Peak 15 miles east of Albuquerque recovered five bodies from the wreckage of a TWA airliner that struck the peak in a snowstorm, raising the death toll to 16. Authorities described severe injuries and ongoing challenges for rescuers facing subfreezing temperatures.
A nationwide spate of violence leaves sixteen dead, including a mass gun battle in New York as police killed a youth after a long siege. In Atlanta a man killed his fiancée and two men before suicide. Hoover Pennsylvania saw a family killed in a four day murder spree. A Los Angeles case reports a raped and beaten woman found dead.
Candidates for city council seats are expected to announce this week. Dr Jack Fox may run again, while Alex Saied and C J Lyons have not stated intentions. Filing deadline is March 4. For the Childress Independent School District Board of Trustees, Marvin Weir and Jesse Cannon have announced, with a filing deadline March 2.
All persons interested in continuing Little and Pony League baseball in Childress are urged to attend a meeting of the officers and directors tonight. President Wal ter Lockhoof says the session starts at 7 30 in the directors room of the C of and BCD where new officers will be elected.
VFW Auxiliary President Mrs Loretta Boyd calls a 7 30 p m meeting Tuesday at the Veterans Building to discuss plans for the convention set for March 12 13 and related activities.
Southeast Asia security talks gather eight SEATO nations in Bangkok for a three day meeting to outline mutual defense use under the Manila ratified pact. Philippine hopes for a NATO type military force seem unlikely as allied policy and retaliatory power are emphasized.
Superintendent Newell Odell said the number of tickets sold by noon tomorrow will decide if one or two buses go from the high school to the Childress Stamford game. If 50 to 60 people sign up, two buses depart at 1 45 p.m. at a cost of 50 cents per person, with tickets sold at the high school for students and the administration building for adults.
VFW members urged to attend Tuesday night meeting at 7 30 to select convention committees and plan the district convention next month said Commander Bill Stephens this morning.
