Funeral services for Mrs J R Leach 93 of Lamesa and former Childress resident were set for 10 a m Friday at the Lamesa Church of Christ with graveside rites Saturday in a hillside cemetery overlooking Idaho Springs She was born October 3 1881 in Kentucky and moved with her family to Dallas County then Childress County where she was active in the United Daughters of the Confederacy and local church groups She taught school in Hall County in 1901 1902 and married J R Leach in 1903 at Fstelline later widowhood noted in obituary.
Lone Star Gas Co. explained a cost adjustment that allowed local gas rates to rise by about 25 cents per thousand cubic feet, or $24 annually, effective after January 28. The Railroad Commission had previously raised Vaca gas rates and ordered Lone Star to pay the current rate to avoid burdening other La Vaca customers.
January rainfall reduced Greenbelt Municipal and Industrial Water Authority usage from January 1974 figures. Jimmy Kuhn, general manager, notes total purchases by all users and five member cities. Funeral services for Clarence R. Shackelford 57 will be held at 2 pm Friday in the Newberry Funeral Home Chapel. Ministers J R Chism and F A Sanders will officiate. Burial will be in Fast Tell Cemetery. He died Wednesday at Childress General Hospital after a long illness. Born November 7 1917 in Hedley he married Maudie Corbelle in 1965 in Memphis. He was a construction contractor.
The nation will switch to daylight saving time this Sunday as clocks move forward one hour at 2 a.m. The change lasts eight months, after which standard time would resume unless Congress acts, with some states exempting parts of their territory.
Officers for a Childress County chapter of the Independent Cattlemen's Association were elected Tuesday night at an organizational meeting. Officers chosen include Bill plus other officers to be announced.

The event is sponsored by Masons with Bradley president Bob Jones vice president Clifton Smith treasurer and Mrs Garth Oliver secretary. Directors elected were John Browning J D Elliott and Tommy Yarbrough. Also addressing cattlemen Bill Masterman discussed industry struggles and education needs noting misrepresentation in media and the need to educate housewives on beef production.
Childress Chief of Police Alvis Maddox warned motorists violating the 20 mph limit on Highway 287 near Wilson School and parking rules at Childress Junior High. He stressed enforcement in the one block area around the school to improve safety.
The City of Childress is told by the Department of Revenue Sharing to expect a letter confirming a clean bill of health on misuse allegations related to the Avenue I paving project. City Manager Louis Sally said Ronnie Cox confirmed no misuse after a complaint briefing.
The American Red Cross Bloodmobile will be at Fair Park Auditorium in Childress from 1 15 p m to 6 30 p m on Wednesday March 12. Appointments may be made through Mrs R Malone Hagan at 937 8305. The visit seeks 85 units and serves residents city county and hospital patients via the Wichita Falls based Red River Blood Bank.
A preconstruction conference at the Texas Highway Department reviewed safety for paving a 2.13 mile section along Avenue I from U S Highway 83 to Farm Road 2530. The project includes grading, structures, base, asphalt stabilized base and asphaltic concrete pavement costing about 462 20288 dollars. Gilvin Terrill Inc Amarillo is involved.
Childress firemen extinguished a blaze in the wall behind a fireplace at 4:05 D Nw. Saturday night with no injuries and no major damage reported. Divorces granted in District Court include Virginia Butler versus Robert G. Butler and Beverly Ann Aduddell versus James R. Aduddell.
