Ranger 8 launched aboard Atlas Agena from Cape Kennedy for a 65 hour mission to photograph up to 4 000 potential lunar landing areas. The 808 pound probe began in a 115 mile earth parking orbit and will use the Agena second stage as a flying launch pad to reach the moon. The mission aims to verify if the lunar plain seen by Ranger 7 remains as smooth as thought.

Cool Damp Weather Hits Texas With One Fatal Exposure
Texas faced cool damp conditions with a warming trend expected by Thursday outside the waterlogged south. Temperatures varied from 16 in Dalhart to 53 in Brownsville as rainfall totals rose in multiple cities. One exposure death was reported as 82 year old Mrs. W F Rushing of Abilene wandered away and died from exposure after being found in a park.

Viet Cong war craft sunk by Vietnamese air force
Viet Namese air force bombed and sank a 100 foot Viet Cong vessel 235 miles northeast of Sai gon. The ship was camouflaged off the coast between Nha Trang and Qui Nhon. Lt. James S. Bowers spotted it from a helicopter as Skyraiders attacked and heavy fire from shore batteries followed. Six Skyraiders sank the vessel.

Shotgun attack injures two youths in Mobile parlor area
In Mobile Alabama two Negro youths were hit by buckshot from a moving automobile Tuesday night while standing outside an ice cream parlor in a racially mixed neighborhood. Billy Kinnard 18 was critically injured and James Lee Sonny Doss 16 seriously hurt. Witnesses said the car had two white men in suits, one possibly the shooter, and sat in the back seat. No prior racial trouble was reported at the parlor.
