The Childress Independent School District reports $13 850 in play-off income led by $6 480 39 from the final against Rockdale at Texas Stadium. Regular season brought $8 929 73. COFC Names Eleven Committee Chairs in Childress

Eleven separate committee chairmen of the Childress Chamber of Commerce were announced today. Don Crook and Robert Proctor will head the agriculture committee. Also listed are chairs for Industrial, Retail Activities, Community Development, Health, Highway and Transportation, Housing, Membership and Finance, Special Events, and the Nominating Committee, with Chamber officers including Bennie Foard as president and Pat Steed as treasurer.

Port Aransas Constable to testify in Johnson disappearance case

Port Aransas Constable Ben Cash said he expects to testify today before a grand jury investigating the disappearance of grain dealer Robert Johnson. Friends say Johnson fell from a pleasure boat and drowned in the Gulf of Mexico off Port Aransas on January 3.

Bond Sales May Set New Record for Childress County 1976

Indications are that Series E and H bond sales will set a modern day record for Childress County in 1976, per chairman Gene Frisbie. The county quota rose to 100000 and was exceeded by 23 percent through November with 12398 in November and 122640 year to date. National totals show Texas sales of 22560585 for the month and 254887405 for eleven months, reaching 94 percent of a 272.4 million goal.

County Tax Boost Ahead for Childress County

Childress County faced a $36 000 deficit last year per county auditor John Inman. He said revenue increases are needed and taxes are the only source, noting doubling valuation would add about $120 000 annually. If valuation passes $15 million, a full time auditor is required and a special election may be called to raise the tax rate.

Wiley Shires Transferred To Fort Worth

Wiley Shires wire chief for Southwestern Bell in Childress for 27 years will become Fort Worth building foreman Monday. He said he is returning to the block where he once worked and his wife will leave her job as secretary to the county judge. Phillip Yant of Fort Worth will take over as wire chief here Wednesday.

Rich Kids to Testify on $486000 Found Money

In Alice Texas a state district court judge allowed two juveniles Percy Garcia age 15 and Gene Bridges 16 to testify about the source of $486,000 police found in their possession. The boys say they dug the money on a relative’s ranch and face no charges. Barrera said one boy would meet the grand jury later.

Rites Planned for C K Young in Estelline

Funeral services for C K Young 88 of Estelline are set for Thursday at First Baptist Church Estelline with Rev Finis Marchman officiating. He died at 5 30 am in Childress General Hospital after falling ill while visiting his daughter in Childress. Burial is in Childress Cemetery. He previously lived in Hall County and worked as a bus mechanic for local schools before retiring in 1962. He was born October 11 1888 in Gainesville Texas and survived by two daughters a son five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Bertha Virginia Johnson Rites Set in Childress

Funeral services for Bertha Virginia Johnson 83 will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church with Rev. James Price and Rev. Joe S. Allen officiating. She died Monday at Childress General Hospital after a long illness. Born April 1 1893 in Batesville Arkansas she moved to Childress in 1901. She worked for W. J. Ross & Sons Dry Goods, 20 years at J. C. Penney, later at Dakil's Smart Shop. Survivors include four sisters Vila Johnson B J Teague Mrs E J Cambell and Mrs Paul O Neal and two brothers Whitt Johnson and Vernon Johnson.
