Bulldozers Used To Free Cave Explorer Body
Rescue workers used bulldozers to carve an access hole through 40 feet of limestone to reach the lifeless body of cave explorer James Mitchell 23 trapped in an 18 inch crevice inside Schroeder's Pants cave. State police said the body was wedged at an awkward angle and frozen to the rock by underground spring water. Mitchell's father flew in from Detroit and returned home convinced his son is dead.

Hollywood news confirms Nat King Cole, 45, died at 3:30 am after a two month fight with lung cancer. He underwent left lung removal surgery on December 8 at St Johns Hospital Santa Monica, with wife Maria at bedside as he declined then stabilized. Ruth Harriet White 93 former Kirkland resident died at Gunter Home for the Aged in Gunter. Funeral at 4 pm Tuesday at Newberry Chapel by E A Sanders. She was born November 5, 1871 in Mississippi and married Tom E White in 1892. Buried in Kirkland Cemetery. Survivors include brother Garner Goodnight of New Boston and a granddaughter Mrs Ozell Johnson of Houston.

King Leads March to Selma Courthouse for Voter Registration
Reverend King and more than 1 000 Negroes marched to the Dallas County Courthouse in Selma Alabama to register to vote. More than 3 400 have been arrested in recent weeks but the march ended without arrests. Sheriff Jim Clark watched as lines stretched over six city blocks and few interfered. About 115 had signed appearance books to gain priority numbers for the voter test.

Final rites for Lucy Ann Petty 83 were set for 4 30 p m today at Newberry Chapel with Rev Joel Allen of the First Baptist Church officiating. Interment is planned for 2 p m Tuesday at Pilot Point Masonic Cemetery with Elder Henry Ball presiding. Petty died Sunday at 1125 a m in a local rest home. She was born October 25 1881 in Tioga and married Jesse T Petty Dee 19 1900 in Tioga. She had lived in Denton Dallas and Grand Saline before moving to Childress in 1964. Survivors include three daughters six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Guardian Fined jailed for DWI in County Court

Norman Hemphill band director returns from the Texas Music Educators Convention in Dallas. The All-State band choir and orchestra performances featured 750 outstanding high school students. Hemphill learned woodwind and percussion techniques and discussed UIL contest regulations with other instructors. LaFeria and Brownwood bands were heard. The event is one of two conventions Hemphill attends yearly. He said conventions provide invaluable information to keep his group aligned with state standards.
