In Austin a televised open forum featured four Democrats and three Republicans running for governor. Missing were Connally and Walker. Democrats touted reform and growth while Republicans urged balance and a two party system.
Pancakes for Progress tickets are selling fast for a pancake party at the Veterans Building on February 26 from 6 30 a m to 7 30 p m. Money raised funds equipment for Fair Park Auditorium with $1 tickets granting unlimited pancakes. Van Harlow CofC-BCD chair urges buying from most organizers or by calling him.

Equipment is moved for an oil test south of Kirkland with drilling to begin within two days. The test aims to reach about 4,600 feet, using the Drilling Department of the Leonard Oil Company. Surface pipe is set to 350 feet as the test acts as an offset to two existing producers.

Nettie Richerson eighty year old former Childress County resident died Tuesday at 5 40 am in St Josephs Hospital Wellington. Funeral services were held at 3 pm Wednesday in Hedley Church of Christ with interment there. Richerson cousin to Dorman Groseclose had two years of ill health and was survived by seven children.
A B 58 Hustler bomber crashed on a Marlow area farm during a routine training flight from Carswell AFB Texas. Three crew members escaped with injuries or survived, including Capt. Robert Fuller and Capt. Arnold Avalon found near the crash and Maj. John Irving believed alive. All were treated at Fort Sill Hospital. An earlier Oklahoma loss marks the second such crash in recent years.
An incomplete police report notes a minor fender bender early yesterday on Avenue F NW. A North Carolina car rear ended a Vernon vehicle. no injuries or tickets were reported. damage estimated at 17.60 dollars.
Lt Col Helen Dorris Stogner assistant U S embassy military attache was found fatally shot in his bed in Leopoldville Congo. A Congo lese chauffeur was arrested about midnight as a suspect and a park guard remained at large. Stogner’s wife and six children reside in El Paso Texas. The embassy waived immunity for a full Congo and U N police investigation.
Bad weather forces another postponement of John Glenn's orbital attempt at Cape Canaveral. Forecasters warn Friday may also be unlaunchable with a possible shift to next week. The Minuteman test also succeeds, delivering a separate military launch into the South Atlantic.

Morton Sobell, jailed for 30 years for espionage, petitions for a new trial arguing his wartime sentence was unjust since no war existed when he was sentenced. He was convicted in 1951 alongside Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, who were executed in 1953. Judge John F. X. McGoey reserved ruling.
French police recovered 73 weapons in Oran while three men disguised as customs officers stole 208 sub machine guns automatic pistols and sawed off shotguns from the government. OAS members suspected authorities said. The city faced strikes outages and deadly riots with 33 dead and 86 wounded in a day.
Plans for the annual Home Show set for April 26 27 and 28 were discussed at the Home Show Committee meeting hosted by Mrs. Glen Stiner. The event will be at Fair Park Auditorium with hours 6 to 10 p m Thursday and Friday and 2 to 10 p m Saturday. A rule prohibits prizes from independent exhibitors who will post numbers instead.
Tom Bailiff was elected president of the Childress Jaycees at the weekly meeting. He will succeed Glen Buckley. Dick Preston was elected first vice president and Jerry Dugan was named second vice president. Jerry Jones attended as a guest.
Childress County singers hold a meeting Sunday starting at 2 p.m. at King Memorial Methodist Church. Public invited by President M. H. Conn. Groups expected from Altus Oklahoma Vernon Quanah Wellington Paducah and Amarillo.
George Enslin, suspected of a three year old burglary at the Livestock Commission office in Childress, was to be returned from Louisiana to face charges after a prior grand jury indictment. Deputy Hollis G Wilson to deliver him to the county jail.
A Kress man, William Robert Hillman, suffered injuries to the left side, possible internal injuries and at least one fracture after his pickup and trailer struck the Burlington freight train north of Childress. The 5:55 pm collision damaged both vehicles at the crossing between the fourth and fifth train cars. Highway Patrolman Wayne Cook investigated and planned further checks at the hospital in Pampa.
Paducah rancher Joe Meadors will speak at an open animal health research meeting at 7 p.m. in the Childress district courtroom. County Agent Harry Cox announced the program will cover soreworm control. Meadors returns from a statewide Austin meeting. all farmers and ranchers are invited.
