In New Orleans on Fat Tuesday Mardi Gras day wild costumes fill the streets as gala parades sing and dance before Lent. The Zulu king leads the revelry by stepping off a boat at Continued On Page Three.
The Commissioners Court appointed J. W. Chambers Neal Mus grove and Sam West to the Chil dress General Hospital Board of Directors for two year terms. West was re appointed to a full term after completing Bill Bradley’s short tenure. Retiring members are Doyle McKinney and W E Helms. Hold over directors are Rowden Cordell Roy Key and W A King with King serving as secretary.
The Streets and Alleys Committee will present practical recommendations for improvements to the City Council at its next meeting. Chairman Mrs. W.J. Sharp announced today after a City Hall session reviewing a thorough local survey focused on alley conditions. The group emphasized cooperation from property owners to keep alleyways neat and vacant lots uncluttered. Members include Mrs. H.W. Shirley Ross Smith Theo Fenter Joe Sweeney Jr J.E. Turner and Chester Hufstedler ler.
Final rites for Betty Elizabeth Johnson were to be held at 2 pm in First Baptist Church with Rev. Joe Allen officiating. Interment followed at Childress Cemetery. Pallbearers included W. L. Foster, Bill Kelley, Ernest Aran, Jim Fields, Cash Hunter, Dee Cawthon, Arch Hays, and Joyce Cheatheam.
The Childress Kart Club will hold a meeting at 7 30 p m in the Courthouse. Members are urged to attend and discuss upcoming races and club plans.
Violence erupts in Moscow New Delhi Cairo Belgrade London and elsewhere as African, Asian, and Soviet students clash with police near embassies. Demonstrators denounce Western involvement in Congo and Lumumba death while authorities seal buildings and issue cautious statements.
Andy Rogers received a paper weight with a 4 H emblem at a Austin banquet. Cullen Jennings of Tulsa presented the emblem as 4 H youths secured a governor proclamation designating March 4‑12 as 4 H week. H G Wells of Tulia and Betty Mason of Carthage also participated in the event.
The Tourist committee of Cof¢ BCD announces the first load of pecan trees will arrive at 2 p.m. Thursday via Greenbelt Supply. Over 1,000 trees were ordered with a second delivery planned next week. Buyers should bring money and a cloth sack to carry the trees for quicker pickup.
Rotarians Rotary Anns and guests meet at 7 p.m. tonight at Hotel Childress for a Valentine Party. The event does not replace or serve as a makeup for the regular Rotary meeting tomorrow, says Pal mer Massey the club president.
Don Hufstedler was hired as coordinator of the Kids Inc. Baseball League here. The selection was made at a meeting of league directors and officers Sunday afternoon.
Speaker Sam Rayburn after a White House conference called the current economic state the most urgent since the great low mood of the early 1930s. He indicated Congress would proceed on administration anti recession plans as committees are organized and noted Cabinet reviews of unemployment plights.
Labor Secretary Arthur J. Goldberg announced two new steps to aid areas with high unemployment. The Bureau of Employment Security will report monthly instead of bimonthly to speed federal aid, and a new Labor Department division will handle automation’s impact on jobs. He noted President Kennedy is concerned and plans to speak at a Wednesday news conference.
The City Council passed a resolution urging separation of the Board of City Development and Chamber of Commerce funds. The plan will be presented to CofC-BCD directors next meeting as funds are currently combined sourced from taxes and CofC scriptions. Doyle McKinney reported on a Civil Defense School. The city audit was approved and a meeting with Childress Independent School District trustees was set to discuss tax renditions.
A weak cold front moved into northern Texas causing unseasonable heat to ease. By daybreak the front stalled and began breaking up with warmer conditions returning by Wednesday. Overnight lows fell below freezing in parts, while highs reached 84 at Laredo and 62 at Houston.
Morris Higley was reelected chairman of the Federal Housing Authority of Childress at the annual directors meeting. M. K. Wilcoxson was reelected vice-chairman with Lola Richardson as secretary. The Authority seeks a $10,000 loan for preliminary plans for 50 housing units approved for Childress. The First National Bank was named depository for housing funds.

Rev. George Sallaway of Holy Angels Catholic Church was honored with the John Henry Newman Award at Oklahoma State University ceremonies. He is the first West Texas priest to receive the honor and has spoken at the national convention in Cleveland. He has served as Newman Chaplain at Texas Tech and Odessa College and wrote articles on Cardinal Newman. Newman speakers include Rev. Sallaway at Midwestern University February 20–24.
The Childress Independent School District Board plans a PTA District Nine dinner April 4 at First Baptist Church with about 200 PTA members expected April 5. A tax discussion with City Council is scheduled for next Monday.
Scout Masters from Kiowa Scout Troop and Bone Head Scout Troop announced preliminary boxing exhibition plans. Funds raised will be split between the troops, with March 25 as a tentative date likely at the high school gym or city auditorium. Trophies and gloves purchase approved and admission set at 1.00 for adults and 0.50 for students.
Morris Higley will travel to Austin on Wednesday to appear before the Finance Committee of the State Senate and the Appropriations Committee of the House on Thursday afternoon. He will also join a Texas Industrial Commission meeting in Austin and is accompanied by Kenneth Fink.
The Greenbelt Bowl, Inc. sponsors of the Greenbelt Bowl Football Classic will apply to the National Federation of High Schools for approval of its annual game. Jeff Henderson, secretary of the Greenbelt Bowl, announced this morning that the filing is to be submitted to NFHS officials in Chicago.
An appeal to the Commissioners Court urged relief for Childress property owners who rent out vacant buildings. It noted agencies using courthouse space pay no rent while landowners shoulder taxes on idle properties. The court promised to investigate. Also approved a $3,000 loan for Precinct 4 road and bridge work and named First National Bank a county depository.
Evangelist Ralph E. Johnson and accompanist Miss Roberta Hall entertained the Lions Club as Johnson continues revival services at the First Methodist Church. Johnson sang and recited a poem while Hall played The Twelfth Street Rag. Lion president LeRoy Gaines announced the International Convention dates for Atlantic City in 1962 Nice France and distributed attendance buttons. An electro cane for the blind was shown as ongoing club support. Royce Key of Fort Worth attended as a guest with his family.

Republican Senate candidate John Tower schedules an informal meeting with voters in Childress tomorrow afternoon. He will land about 3 p.m. at the airfield and join a coffee hour in the Hotel Childress ballroom hosted by local GOP leaders including Marge Toft and Colley Briggs. The public is invited.
A fire around 7 am destroyed the fishing gear stock owned by L V Soapy Keel at Lake Childress. Damaged wiring caused the blaze, but the building was saved and will be usable after repairs. No loss estimate yet. account books were not in the office per Mrs Keel.
