Benito Alonzo was convicted of smuggling guns to prison inmate Fred Gomez Carrasco and received a life sentence. A habitual criminal finding was also made.
President Ford volunteered to provide all services and resources of the executive branch to track the leak of a secret House intelligence committee report. Press secretary Ron Nessen said Ford is confident the leak did not originate in the executive branch and noted the offer came after Village Voice published a partial text of the report. CIA Director George Bush halted use of certain U S news outlets as undercover agents overseas in his first public act.
Supt Jack Martin announced Public Schools Week will be observed March 15 at a Childress area event sponsored by Masonic Lodge No 695. The organizing committee includes Jimmy Smith as chairman Harold Wright co chair C L Carter programs and listed members Spec Landrum Clinton McGhee and others.
Funeral services for Gladney Eiland Williams 69 will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Childress Church of Christ with J. R. Chism officiating. Burial follows in Childress Cemetery. Williams died Wednesday at his home of an apparent heart attack after recent open heart surgery. Born January 5, 1907 in Morgan Mill, he moved to Childress in 1914 and was a barber. He married Antie M. Smith December 24, 1933. Survivors include his wife, one son Tommy of San Marcos, three brothers G. A. of Childress Cecil of Belew N M and J. E. of Clovis, and three sisters Oleta Richburg of Midland Faye Nell Coats and Cleo Porterfield, both of Clovis.
City officials in Childress spent nearly two hours on a six item agenda voting to seek bids for two new pickup trucks with standard transmission and heaters. The council also authorized a $16000 federal state grant for lights at a Little League field between Avenue I and the City Zoo with the city covering half the cost. A fence purchase request was tabled for study. plans call for two weeks research before action.
The Childress County Chapter of the American Cancer Society reports January memorials total loaned funds at 312 dollars, lifting fiscal year receipts to 500 dollars. New district representative David Daly, a Wichita Falls native, replaces Aaron Hess. Daly attends Midwestern University with wife and three month old son Matthew. The meeting covered posters in downtown businesses, student film showings, and supplies to one patient. The next meeting is scheduled for March.
Lewis H. White of the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation warned a regional group that federal and state funding for transportation has fallen while needs rise. He cited an $11 billion backlog, with only about $1.9 billion in funds projected over the next two decades, and noted that most of this would be available for six years or less. The department has launched a McKinsey study to test arterial options and financing, while cutting costs through a workforce reduction and project deferrals.
The American Red Cross Bloodmobile collected 85 units in Childress on Wednesday. Gene Nelson joined the two gallon club and Doy Skinner joined the one gallon club, receiving certificates from Bloodmobile chairman Mrs Lula Phillips. The event drew many volunteers and donors, with a May return date planned for another blood drive.

The jury will hear a taped communique in which Patricia Hearst claims voluntary involvement in the April 1974 bank robbery and likely hear her recount her life with the Symbionese Liberation Army. Judge Carter ruled the tape admissible, enabling Hearst to take the stand. The prosecution said five or six witnesses will testify on evidence and arrest details.
The Freeport News reports billionaire recluse Howard Hughes left Freeport Bahamas with a retinue aboard three jets around 2 a.m. bound for Mexico City. Summa Corp. declined to confirm. hotel officials offered no knowledge of his whereabouts.
Reggie Manuel took first place in the farm mechanics metal division at the Childress County Youth Project Show. His win was not submitted to The Index by the County Extension Office in the Courthouse.
The Veterans of World War I will gather at the Veterans Building at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday for a meeting.
