New York stocks opened lower with further selling after Monday’s broad decline. The Dow industrials tested the 460 floor, while rails slipped. bargain hunters picked up select issues like Douglas Aircraft and General Motors amid heavy 1000-share blocks.
A wind storm nearing hurricane force in Wyoming moved into the northern and central Plains with gusts up to 40 mph. Amid the winds, two children drowned when their ferry capsized crossing a washed‑out Guyandotte River bridge in West Virginia, linked to floods two weeks prior. Light snow affected Chicago and Great Lakes. scattered showers and snow flurries observed elsewhere.
Roy Mock sixty one died Sunday afternoon after several days critical illness at Childress General Hospital. Final rites were held at the Church of Christ with Harrell Collard and Rev J O Haymes officiating. Burial followed in Childress Cemetery under Newberry Funeral Home direction.
Elections for the Childress Independent School District and county boards will be held April 6 with a 30 day filing deadline for the Childress district and 10 days for others. At a board meeting Warn er Stevens and Roy Key filed petitions for re election, with Key requesting withdrawal and Stevens remaining a candidate. County board vacancies include member at large Arlie Key and Precincts 2 Bernie Steed and Precinct 4 M B Morris. Two voting boxes needed at the courthouse and one at the Junior High for the district.
Two Senate committees began drafting the Senate version of President Eisenhower’s Middle East resolution. Leaders from both parties favored an administration acceptable plan. Sen. H Alexander Smith and Sen. John Sparkman predicted substantial changes and broad approval, with possible $200 million in discretionary military and economic measures.
The Russell McGuire-B P Smith Land and Cattle No 1 wildcat in northwest Childress County will be abandoned after reaching 5 550 feet. Drillers from Delmar Drilling Company report 40 feet in Ellenberger sand with no oil or gas, and no further information on three other proposed wildcats in the county.
A meeting of men interested in joining an adult basketball league will be held Thursday at 7 30 in the directors room of the C of C and BCD, Clay ton Floyd reported. The session was originally set for Monday night. All interested are urged to attend.
The Blue and Gold Banquet for Cub Scout Pack 61, sponsored by Childress Elks Lodge, will be at 7 PM Thursday at the Lodge building. Guests include pack members and parents with extra guests allowed for a small charge. Master of ceremonies is M. K. Wilcoxson and Cubmaster is James Ragsdale.

The Childress City Council on first reading approved an ordinance establishing a $2 reconnect fee for gas service reinauguration within 12 months and for nonpayment terminations. The charge excludes new customers and certain churches and government buildings and applies to within the same town and billing district.
The Childress Montgomery Ward store to move into the Bruce Motor Company building at 211 3rd Street Northwest with a Ward's Servicecenter to open soon. It will offer TV and radio service, tires and auto accessories, sporting goods, and larger items like boats. The Avenue A Northeast warehouse will close. Betts will manage both the 205 Commerce and new department. The Bruce Motor building is owned by John F. Cates.
The Chamber of Commerce finance drive has reached 4807 dollars, reported secretary-manager Bull Thompson. Several teams have not reported or completed quotas, with two leading teams at 100 percent and a third at 9 percent. Letters detailing each team’s standing are being sent to all teams.
Boy Scout Troop 63 and officials visited the Childress Lions Club during National Boy Scout Week. Jim Johnson, Chief Scout Executive of Wichita Falls, spoke on summer programs including Scout-O-Rama camps and the Jamboree at Valley Forge. Alton Landrum received a plaque for perfect Lions attendance and service.
Cub Scouts of Pack 63 held their annual Blue and Gold Banquet in Fellowship Hall at the First Methodist Church Friday night. About 93 scouts and parents attended as each den sponsored decorations and the Advancement ceremony awarded recognition to scouts. Edwin Cato showed a film of a Bonehead Boys trip.
National Boy Scout Week marked by Scouts assuming duties in city county district and state offices. Mike Ragsdale reported to the mayor. Frank Webb Eddie Hoddleston Steve Feasel and Eddie Joe Hammond sat in council seats. City officials included Sammy Rushon City Manager Johnny Mc Connell City Secretary Jerry Newberry and Fire Marshals Homer Mc Caugh Billy Drake. Police Chief Jimmy Hamm with assistants John Ladd Fred die Vaught and Butch Heed. health officers Jimmy Dalton Mike Davenport Billy Merrett Charles Lawrence. County Judge Johnny Wilson. county staff included Jimmy Czewski John Wright Billy Coyne.
Chil Dress Independent School District postpones contract decisions until late in the term citing lower ADA. Supt. Odell warns absences of about 530 daily threaten firing or nonrenewal under Elmer Aiken rules. The board also hires attorney Charles Reynolds to pursue delinquent taxes, in exchange for 15 percent of any collected amounts.
Childress Rotary Club members will hold their regular noon luncheon Wednesday at the Presbyterian Church replacing Hintel Childress. President Gaines Highsmith announced the group will dine with delegates from the February meeting of the North Texas and Southern Oklahoma Development Association. The association meets here Wednesday morning and ends with the luncheon.
