County Hires Lawyer For $700,000 Suit
Childress County Commissioners Court voted unanimously to hire Richard Bird to defend eight county officials in a $700,000 civil suit filed in U S District Court in Amarillo by Eugene E. Brandon. Brandon, serving 13 years, was convicted last June of kidnapping in a Panhandle case involving Alvis E. Taylor and Police Chief Alvis Maddox.

Hostage Siege Ends With Surrender In Maryland Bank
Stephen Gregory, 27, of Silver Spring, Maryland, held seven bank hostages for seven hours after entering the suburban Washington bank with two rifles. He released all seven unharmed and surrendered to police early today after negotiating by phone. He drank beer and ate a steak sandwich during the standoff and made no real threats or demands.
