Near Saigon three U S Army helicopters were shot down by communist fire 30 miles east of the city killing one crewman and wounding eight. North of Da Nang U S jet bombers reportedly prepared to strike targets in Laos as conflict escalated.

The City Council ordered police to enforce a new livestock ordinance and to conduct permit inspections for about 20 requests. The council advertised bids for 5 000 feet of four inch water lines as part of replacing small lines ahead of Greenbelt water arrival. City funds rose by 11 917 from higher water rates. A radio unit for police cars was approved. A joint meeting of county officials and boards was set to review delinquent taxes. Fair Park pool leased for summer 1965. bids for cleaning 37 000 feet of lines were opened. Shur Clean Plainview bid 5 283 35. other bids were 5 965 50 and 18 294 20. contract to be awarded by engineer committee.
High winds lightning and heavy rains struck the Dallas Fort Worth region with up to 4 inches of overnight rainfall flooding streets and washing out a highway at Benbrook. Snow cloaked the high plains while storms lashed Arlington and Canton Mineola. Weather outlook forecasts gradual clearing and warming, with a cold front and light snow possible in Northwest Texas by Wednesday.
A school board election for three trustee vacancies was ordered for April 3 at the regular meeting Monday night. Outgoing trustees Dr Jack Fox Dr Shell Townsend and Dean Decker were unanimously urged to run again. Townsend said he is undecided about running. Fox and Decker could not comment. Candidates must file by 5 p m March 4 at the administration office. Absentee voting runs March 15 to March 30 with one voting box at Junior High School.
Donley County Commissioners Court passed a resolution protesting Greenbelt Municipal and Industrial Water Authority legislation to use underground water. The action aligns with the Farm Bureau and Clarendon City Council. Dr S H Townsend says the Authority has no funds to develop underground water but seeks optional access to member wells if needed.
A one car accident on an ice covered overpass west of Quanak at about 2 55 a m caused light damage with no injuries. Driver was Mrs Bette Hughes Humphrey of Fort Worth and the passenger was her husband Arnold D Humphrey.
A Home Nursing course will be taught in Childress March 18-19 and 22-24 by Miss Donna Sims of the Midwestern Area American Red Cross. Open to area high school graduates, the program trains women to teach home nursing sessions. Ten to twelve participants are sought. classes run six hours daily for five days at the First Presbyterian Church Hospitality Room, with a $1.25 book cost. Call Mrs. Margaret Hipps for enrollment.
The first moisture in Childress since January 9 fell early this morning. Dodson reported an inch, FAA station 0.38 inch, downtown Childress 0.42 inch, Kirkland 0.50 inch, High Point 0.40 inch. Tell 0.25 inch, Ransom place 0.30 inch. The moisture will help wheat and other winter crops.
An armada of ships and planes combed the Atlantic off Long Island for the 84 people lost when Eastern Air Lines Flight 663 crashed after takeoff from Kennedy Airport. Bodies recovered were few and fragments, including two opera singers among the 79 passengers, with investigations by CAB and FAA under way.
Three new two year appointees to the County Hospital Board are C. A. Williams C. R. Dugan and Truman Webb joining holdovers W. J. Boykin Mrs. Irwin Carter and Mrs. Dalby Fleming. Retirements include Fletcher Carter Sam West and O F Meyers. Election officials for county precincts were named with the election judge listed first for each precinct. The First National Bank was approved as depository for county funds for two years and audits for 1964 were approved.
New York based UPI report states cancer existed before civilization. It argues cancer appeared early in life and is found across animals and plants. The piece notes birds, fish, mammals show cancer and even plant gall diseases show cancerous processes. It mentions honey and other species as evidence of widespread cancer susceptibility.
Memphis reports two of eleven injured in a two car crash at Leslie community Sunday afternoon remain in critical condition. Mrs. D. C. Hall of Leslie and Mrs. Joe Wall, wife of the other driver, are hospitalized. Mrs. Hall transferred to Amarillo hospital. Carolyn Sue Wall, 11, also listed at an Amarillo hospital. Bill Henson, brother of Mrs. Hall, of Childress, was with them.
Sen. Gallo Calhoun Jr of Tyler moves forced pooling bill closer to passage. approved on second reading 28-3 but no emergency clause prevents final Senate vote. Also, Sen. Ralph Hall proposes renaming East Texas State College to East Texas State University and a related board shift. House meets briefly. Sen. Criss Cole seeks open meetings for all government bodies except the legislature.
Mrs. Lillian Norris will be honored Thursday from 3 to 6 p.m. in the Southwestern Bell lounge at Vernon for completing 15 years of service. John Adams of Wichita Falls will present a gold bracelet with a bell emblem and three stars, each for five years of service. Norris has 14 years of perfect attendance and will receive a charm bracelet with bells and toy phones.
The stockholders of Childress Country Club were informed no merger proposal will be presented to them after the Elks Lodge No. 1113 members rejected the plan last night. If approved by the Elks, the merger would have gone to the Country Club stockholders for a vote.
The Dallas regional office of the Bureau of the Census will conduct a February Current Population Survey in the Childress area to gather information on arrangements made by working mothers for child care. Mrs. Doris Jean Clements will ask questions as part of the local inquiry alongside standard employment data. Data collection starts the work week beginning February 15.
The Pentagon reported three Texas soldiers among ten seriously wounded in a Viet Cong attack on Pleiku military facilities in South Vietnam Saturday. Pvt Norman R. Garrette of Longview WO George J. Combs of Amarillo and SP -5 Felix Guerra of McAllen were named among the injured.
The school board voted unanimously to comply with Title 6 of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by signing an assurance of compliance. The action prohibits discrimination in programs receiving federal funds and pledges immediate measures to enforce the agreement. The board plans to retain J. J. Rhoads School as a neighbor.
W H Bill Biggers of Abilene has arrived in Childress to become District Foreman for Lone Star Gas. He replaces Clayton H Kuhlmann who transfers to Waco as General Service Foreman. Kuhlmann has served since November 1959. Biggers, with the company since 1946, was a service man at the Abilene regional headquarters. The Biggers have two children, Merrie Sue and Sabra Ann.
Mrs. Lenora Lesley, chief nurse of the Red River Regional Blood Center, retires after 17 years with the Red Cross. She led blood donations and trained local volunteers during prior Childress bloodmobile visits. A dinner in her honor is at 7 p.m. today in Fellowship Hall, First Methodist Church, Wichita Falls.
Marion Hightower a 27 year old from Childress was hospitalized at M D Anderson in Houston around midnight with Hodgkin's disease. He was accompanied by his wife and father L O Hightower. The family reported he had been ill about a year and a half, more seriously in the past five months.
Illness-driven closures affect eight schools in Central and North Texas including Jacksboro Greenville Everman La Vega Waco Midway Waco Robinson and Moody. Absentee rates rise with 225 at Jacksboro, 705 of 3800 at La Vega, 115 of 700 at Robinson, 58 of 183 at Moody and 160 of 1049 at Midway.
Ross Thomas Franks and his wife Annie Franks of Quanah were injured in a one car crash three and a half miles north of Quanah on Highway 283. Mrs Franks was trapped under the car for about five and a half hours before help arrived when a Quanah officer spotted the wreckage. She suffered a pelvic fracture leg lacerations exposure and shock. Mr Franks had a slight back injury.
