City police on duty each school day monitor the red light at Wilson School on Highway 287. A patrolman issued one ticket this morning for running the light. Chief Alvis Maddox praised the officers for safeguarding students and noted no injuries.
President Eisenhower urged Congress to reform the federal farm program toward sensibility and economic soundness. He proposed expanding the soil bank to 60 million acres, with in kind payments from surplus crops, and urged constructive, non subsidy policies while maintaining food for peace and market expansion.
The Childress Board of Trustees extended contracts for all fulltime principals for another year. Gar land Terrell gains a two year term with a $200 yearly raise. Other principals receive two year contracts at last year’s salary. Head Coach Bill Haralson also extends to two years. Driver education planned at $15 per student, but dropped this year due to no car. A three quarter ton pickup will be purchased from Army surplus. Southern Association inspectors visit Feb 23. Tax funds cover interest and sinking, with remaining collections allocated to maintenance.
Wilson School PTA members conducted a three session traffic survey at the stop light near Wilson School. In total 1967 east west crossings were counted with 543 failing to stop, 87 failing to slow down, and out of county plates overrepresented among those ignoring signals.
A contract offering Chil five acres of land for a new school was presented to the Childress Board of Trustees. The land in northwest Childress would be donated by Mr and Mrs W W Heckathorn. No action was taken as funding must be approved and land suitability will be checked. President Bill King praised the Heckathorns for their generosity.
County Agent Chile Smith and two local 4 H Club boys travel to Wichita Falls to attend and show calves at the Fat Stock Show. James Roy Austin and Keith Moore accompany him. They will return Friday or Saturday after the sale on Friday, the report states.
The Cub Scout Blue and Gold Banquet will start at 7 p.m. tonight at the Elks building. Cubs, parents and leaders were reminded today by Mrs. A. T. Henderson.
City Council approved free fishing on both lakes for retired men and their wives with official retirement forms available around March 1. Eligibility excludes active retirees with jobs or unemployed spouses. Lake Childress fishing opens April 2. water skiing restricted if lake water is pumped. $425 for repairs to the fish and game warden’s house, used as the Keel family residence.
The Childress Board of Trustees heard Dr. Morris Wallace of Texas Tech present a report on the physical equipment for the school system. Two survey committee plans were outlined, costing 750000 and 720000 dollars. A follow-up meeting at 7 30 pm Thursday will include the architect for further discussion and recommendations.
The Public Housing Authority of Childress held its organizational session. M. K. Wilcoxson was elected vice chairman and Lola Richardson was named temporary secretary. Morris Higley was appointed chairman by the City Council as the authority was formed. The constitution by laws and resolutions recommended by the Public Housing Authority were approved.
Cecil McNeil Safety Officer spoke to Amarillo politicians about a coordinated record keeping system for police and safety agencies. The council backed the idea and scheduled future work with McNeil. Jeff Henderson discussed salt water spring prospects near Estelline and a saline plant. Mayor Michie Thaten and others will meet Brig. Gen. William Whipple of the Army Corps of Engineers to pursue the plan. Henderson outlined Civil Defense needs including a $700 emergency mobile power unit with half cost covered by the government, no action taken yet. Gasoline bids were opened with Texaco low on regular and Ethel gas, Gulf Oil low on diesel. Theo Fenter from the Water Department will attend a Texas A&M water school.
City Council approves hiring a school patrolman at Wilson School to monitor student ingress and egress during arrival, lunch, and dismissal. The Childress Independent School District will pay 30 dollars and the City 30 dollars for the patrol, with official authority via the City Police Department and issued cap badge and whistle. Chief Alvis Maddox comments on campus patrol needs.
A severe dust storm struck the Childress area around noon with winds up to 74 mph at the FAA airfield. Visibility dropped to less than a quarter mile until 1 45 p.m. A power pole fire knocked out field power but was repaired shortly after. No aircraft were grounded though dust rose to 11 500 feet MSL. Noon temperature 74, falling to 72 by 1 p.m. TV cable service interrupted by dust. A cold front was forecast to move into Texas tonight bringing cooler air.
A two car collision at the Third Street and Avenue C intersection left no injuries and one ticket issued. Roy Weldon Howard, 106 6th Street Southwest, driving south on Third, struck Daisy Evans Avery, a 69 year old Route 2 Childress resident traveling west on C. Evans Avery received a ticket for failure to grant right of way. pickup sustained considerable damage.
London papers rail at the Queen's decision to attach the Mountbatten name to the royal line. The Daily Mirror front page denounces the plan as unlikely to win public approval on the eve of the birth of her third child. Buckingham Palace announced a Mountbatten-Windsor surname for all descendants not titled as royals.
Susan Mack, wife of ex FCC Commissioner Richard A. Mack, files for divorce citing his drinking as the cause. He is at Jackson Memorial Institute for an alcoholism related mental condition and faces a pending second conspiracy trial in Washington. She recalls moving to Florida in 1958 with their 13 year old daughter and that he refused support while she earned 38.60 weekly as a sales clerk.
During the regular meeting Monday night the City Council named a planning and housing committee and a building code committee. The planning group includes Frank Douglas Roy Willyard Lloyd Walkup Bill Adams Tom Hardin Charles Rogers A A Bass and Bill Hamm. The building code panel comprises Joe Morgen Leonard Trosper Larkin Wallis Roy Willyard Homer Baker Quincy Smartt Hollis Reavis and Gene Allison.
Reported at 2 15 pm guests suddenly lifted the front metal and wooden over hang structure at the Davis Auto Co 228 B NW. The entire awning extension was lifted out and crashed near the street. No one was struck or injured.
County Attorney Charles Reynolds leads action following a Monday council session to press Oklahoma authorities for stricter enforcement of liquor laws near the Texas Oklahoma border. A letter will go to the Oklahoma Alcohol Board of Control with copies to the Governor and Attorney General. Local parents and law enforcement promise to handle the issue locally.
Late reports from The Index UPI wire service described a murder trial story as unprintable due to transmission trouble between Childress and Amarillo. The garbled dispatch withheld sensitive details while noting national interest and anticipation for tomorrow's issue.
Representatives of seven counties will meet February 18 at 7 30 p m at Hotel Childress to discuss Lyndon B Johnson's presidential campaign. Attending are Charlie Gibson Amarillo district chair and Mrs Joe Ray 18th district chairwoman. Coffee and doughnuts will be served. Counties named include Childress Cottle Motley Collingsworth Hall Wheeler Donley.
Over 90 Boy Scouts, parents and leaders attended the Golden Anniversary Banquet Monday night at the First Methodist Church, sponsor of Troop 61. Court of Honor highlighted the event with Tenderfoot to David Baker Sylvester Ricks Don Palmer and Joe Moore earning ranks, Second Class to Mike Clark David Galligan Jerry Henderson Johnny McConnell Bobby Rowland and Joe Don Sledge, Life Scout to Preston Stevens. Merit Badge awards went to Preston Stevens in camping hiking swimming life saving nature and Citizenship of the Nation. Board of Review for advancements included Roy Key A V McFarland and Warner Stevens. The program opened with Scout Prayer by Rev Lennor Hester opening ceremony directed by James Harmon and attended by numerous scouts and leaders.
The 50th anniversary of the Boy Scouts was observed at noon at the Lions Club with Scout Troop 63 as guest. Rev. Carl Hudson spoke, stressing Christian faith, patriotism, and responsible leadership. Closing remarks were given by Field Representative Bob Tillerson, with other local supporters honored.
State Representative W. S. Heatly of Paducah will be principal speaker at the annual Distributive Education Bosses Banquet in town on April 1. Heatly has been selected for a Texas Distributive Education Clubs award, to be presented February 27 in San Antonio, for contributing to distributive education and leadership development.
A Masonic Grand Officer will visit the local Childress Chapter and Commandery on February 12, announced by Commander A A Bass. A dinner honors Mr and Mrs A G Coots of Romero, Grand Warder of the Grand Commandery Knights Templar of Texas, who will inspect the local Commandery. Dinner at 6 p m at Gay's, then a meeting at the Masonic Temple. reservations due by noon Friday with Bass or Ben Hardison.
