A storm Friday yielded only 0.66 inches of moisture, making Childress streets dangerous to travel. The season total reaches 0.70 inches as a clearing, warming trend is expected to continue despite Texas weather, with a high pressure system moving eastward through the state.
The Childress County ASCS office announces deficiency payment provisions for 1975 wheat and cotton crops under the Agriculture and Consumer Protection Act of 1973. Deficiency payments are issued to producers on participating farms when the higher of the national weighted average market price received or other specified figures is met. Funeral rites for George Owen Spear 88 are at 2 p.m. in First Baptist Church. Rev. Joe S. Allen will officiate with burial in Childress Cemetery by Newberry Funeral Home. Spear died 1:30 a.m. Saturday at Childress General Hospital. Born October 10, 1887 in Bentonville Arkansas, he married Burma J. Bartee here March 16, 1920.
Funeral services for Roy Curtis Mullins 74, former resident, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in the Newberry Funeral Chapel with burial in Childress Cemetery. Minister Robert Carter and J R Chism of the Childress Church of Christ will officiate with pallbearers Curtis Mullins III, Ronnie Mullins, Mike Mullins, Grady Dorn, Lonnie Elkins and Clyde Holeman.
A holdover Travis County grand jury is poised to return at least two more indictments against Senate Secretary Charles Schnabel. State officials indicate Schnabel will not testify, citing grand juries’ limits and their prior actions. The panel has summoned bank and oil company employees for records and will hear Schnabel’s complaint against Alex Martinez, fired for alleged theft of state paper. The earlier charges included official misconduct and theft tied to payroll and a parking lot owner.

District Judge Robert Montgomery sentenced Norvil Taylor to five years in the state pen at Huntsville. Taylor will remain in jail awaiting appeal with bonds set at 5 000 dollars for the appeal and 25 000 for robbery plus 50 000 for burglary. Taylor was convicted last month for the July 14 1973 shooting death of Herman King.
Guatemala reels from a massive quake with hundreds of aftershocks raising the death toll to about 7,875 and unofficial estimates doubling that figure. Life in ruins includes 200,000 homeless, 40,000 injured, widespread disease fears, grave shortages of food, medicine, water, and power as President Laugerud orders mass burials and medical mobilization.
The Red River Valley Translator organization raised annual dues from 36 to 42 dollars. Dues are now payable between February 10 and March, covering a nine month period for 31.50 dollars. Claude Andrews noted rising operating costs necessitated the increase and said paid customers will be published on March 14.

Judge Carter will hear prosecution and defense testimony Monday on a tape in which Patricia Hearst says she willingly robbed a bank with a loaded gun. Defense argues she acted under duress from Symbionese Liberation Army kidnappers. jurors will not attend the hearing.
The FBI has cleared patrolmen of the Department of Public Safety of brutality in the arrest of Eugene Brandon last Sunday. Statements from the dispatcher, arresting officer, and details of the gunpoint kidnapping during the search were obtained, with findings to be forwarded to the FBI in Amarillo. Ray Lester leads the Amarillo FBI investigation.
Former City Councilman W L Dub Eikman announces candidacy for mayor of Childress. He serves on the Childress Independent School District board and runs a service station.
Texas Comptroller Bob Bullock warns the anticipated 1.4 billion surplus for 1976-77 has shrunk to near zero at times due to legislative spending. He now projects about 428 million by Aug. 31 1977 if spending stabilizes, but says any growth could require a large tax bill. He notes oil and gas tax gains and revenue sharing extensions could lift the figure. Gov Dolph Briscoe expects no new taxes for 1978-79.

Screens on seven windows and two outside doors of the Office of the Federal Housing Authority were damaged on Friday night by vandals. Police report no entry attempted. Federal officials will be notified, per Don McFarland, chair of the Authority, and Arthur Caradine is listed as director.
Authorities investigate a burglary at 310 South Main Childress stealing about 3000 dollars in stereo gear including Teac reel to reel and mixer Teac cassette and Kenwood components Club Casino Synthesizer Epiphone guitar and a 2000 dollar reward offered by C B Barfield for capture of the culprits. The residence was fully ransacked.
Funeral services for Ethel Hester 76 were held at 2 p m Friday in the Primitive Baptist Church Wellington with Elder W R Henderson and Elder Jack Hays officiating. Burial followed in Wellington cemetery.
One crash reported during sleet in Childress as Jerry Don Henderson rear ended Brenda Gail Countryman on Highway 287. Henderson cited for following too closely. minor damage and no injuries. Officers Finis Wrinkle and Wayland Wright investigated. Roads deemed accident free by DPS officials.
Chief of Police Alvis Maddox remains in St. Anthony's Hospital Amarillo awaiting further observation after developing a fever. Doctors list his condition as good as they decide when he will be returned to Childress. Maddox was wounded by Eugene Brandon at city hall early last Sunday morning.
The Board of Trustees of the District will meet at 8 p.m. Monday in the School Administration Building. Council to Meet Childress City Councilmen will meet in regular session at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Council Chambers at City Hall.
One divorce was granted in District Court. Vaneta Smith Moseley versus Coy D. Moseley concluded with the restoration of her former surname Smith.
