Authorities report few clues on Patricia Hearst’s whereabouts and do not rule out continued captivity in Berkeley. In New York cotton futures rose as much as seven dollars fifty cents a bale on renewed demand after recent declines in March 1974 deliveries.
Gene Merrifield of the Chamber of Commerce warns area merchants about a shifting scam. A thief offers to change a $1 for a $20 and leaves with 19 one dollar bills, claiming to fetch the remaining dollar from a husband in a car, then vanishes with the envelope.
President Nixon sent a five paragraph letter to Judge Gesell restating his claim that the court cannot resolve the dispute between the executive and legislative branches. He again asserted executive privilege over all five tapes sought by the Senate Watergate committee.
The Nixon administration told Congress it will end most wage and price controls by April 30 and rely on persuasion to curb prices. Cost of Living Council chief Dunlop said persuasion can rival orders and urged authority to expand the council into an umbrella agency coordinating economic policies and monitoring anti inflation.
A Childress businessman reports letters to customers about nationwide truck delays. Local merchants mostly dodge layoffs and shortages, though some fear conditions may worsen. Hospital chief cites plasma supply risk but remains hopeful as drugs come from nearby Amarillo and Wichita Falls.
Snow and ice coated the Texas Panhandle causing travel disruptions while cotton gins remained active. Officials reported 34 000 plus bales in yards and continued ginning for up to two weeks despite the severe cold.
A cotton burr pile 150 feet from the Cee Vee gin sparked by high winds burned for days, destroying a garage and damaging a residence but leaving no injuries. Firecrews expect the blaze to burn out in several days as observers remain on scene. The cause is under investigation and the gin will restart once the fire ends.
Prime Minister Edward Heath called a national election for February 28 and asked coal miners to defer their strike during the campaign. The walkout begins Sunday, with the miners' executive to meet Friday to decide the stance. Heath dissolved Parliament Friday and Queen Elizabeth II will return March 1 to appoint the new prime minister.
Three races shaping up as filing deadlines close. City Council puts three seats up with March 2 deadline in City Manager Louis Sally’s office. Incumbents Buckley and Maddox hint at plans. Cheek and Massey undecided. Absentee voting March 13–29. election April 2 at City Hall. Downtown parking meters issue on ballot. Hospital Board has three open seats with Hagan not seeking reelection as County Treasurer candidate.
Funeral services for Jerry Lorimer Jefferies 41 of Amarillo formerly of Childress were held at the First Baptist Church Chapel with Rev. Joe S. Allen officiating. Interment followed at Childress Cemetery. survivors include wife Peggy, three sons, a daughter, two brothers, a sister, and several aunts and an uncle.
Paul Taylor owner of Childress Livestock Auction says the sale barn damaged by a Monday fire should reopen in two to three weeks after adjustors and appraisers finish estimates. Fire started from a leaking gas jet under seats and winds gusted to 35 mph. Fire Marshall Merrell warned a roof breach could have destroyed the building.
Childress Fire Department extinguished a grass fire at 3 p.m. Tuesday two and a half miles south of Childress on Highway 83. There was no damage.
World War I Veterans and Auxiliary will meet at 11 30 a m Saturday for a luncheon and business period.
The United Daughters of the Confederacy announces a corrected memorial service date. Due to reporting error the program will be held on April 27 and not February 9. The UDC reporter apologized for the mix up.
