President Kennedy unveils plans to add 53 aircraft to the airlift fleet including 30 C135 jets and 23 C130E turboprops with intercontinental range. The move aims to boost defense while trimming overseas military spending and potentially restricting foreign car imports.
The third round of the Kids Basketball Program is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday. Officials with experience are urged to arrive early to sign up for the games they wish to officiate. Robins face Falcons at 1 p.m. Sparrows meet Owls at 4 p.m. Buffaloes play Tigers at 1 p.m. Lions take on Bulldogs at 2 p.m.
Danial T.M. Davis Jr. of Childress received his Master of Arts degree at the end of the 1960 61 Fall Semester from the University of Texas He was one of 127 UT students to complete a master's degree this period.
Fifty Brazilian marines maintain control as Capt. Henrique Galvao and his rebel group surrender the 20,906 ton liner. Passengers are released to land with court action pending over ownership and fate. The government plans to decide the ship's future in court while Colonial Navigation Co. seeks to reclaim it.
Ray Hamilton aged 17 and son of Mr and Mrs J W Hamilton received the Distinguished Rifleman Award from the National Rifle Club during ceremonies at the First Methodist Church. Hamilton is a junior at Childress High School and was praised by Roy Hassell as one of a thousand boys to win the award for unusual shooting skill.
President Kennedy shifts focus to Laos crisis after reviewing U S policy with Ambassador Winthrop Brown. He aims for an independent peaceful Laos under current difficult conditions and awaits the Soviet response to a proposed revival of the International Control Commission. Fulbright urged new policy ideas after a closed session with Brown.
Elections for the Chil dress Independent School District Board of Trustees set for April 1. Two seats open currently held by Irby Teague and J B Holland. Filing closes March 1. filings may be signed as intent or by petition signed by five voters.
Dr F W Maddux president of Lubbock Christian College will speak at the Kirkland Church of Christ Sunday morning at 10 45 a m Eldon Sanders pastor announced The talk will cover Christian education and is set for Kirkland Texas.
In Washington for talks the British prime minister seeks assurances from President Kennedy that the United States will not downgrade the Anglo American alliance. He aims to address a perceived shift toward Africa and Latin America and reaffirm Europe as a core focus of security policy.
Hardin Grocery and Market at 100 Main Street asks the city to install parking meters in front of the store on Main Street and Avenue A Norris. Hardware had requested meters earlier this week.
The El Rancho Cafe started operations today marking its official opening. Local residents plan a modest opening to celebrate the new dining option in town.
In Austin UPI reports multiple tax proposals surface as the Texas Legislature contends with revenue needs. Rep Tony Konioth seeks a 3 percent levy on gas electricity and telecom sales. Rep Jack Connell proposes a 2 percent tax on luxury items over 50 dollars. Rep John Allen favors a flat 2 percent general sales tax. Gov. Price Daniel opposes these taxes, urging non tax solutions. Additional items include a potential tax on hobbies and photography gear, and a plan to restructure appellate courts and funding ideas.
Greenbelt Bowl sponsors will send Morris Higley Dr Bob Jones and Jeff Henderson to Austin to seek TIL approval for the Greenbelt game to continue. The NCAA warns that All Star players risk losing a year of NCAA eligibility without TIL oversight.
The Childress Democrat Club at the courthouse recommends Havins for acting Postmaster of the Childress Post Office. The post has been held by Nadine Parr. Carroll Byrd seeks permanent appointment after resigning to take a rural route. Havins has served 16 years and is a World War II Purple Heart veteran.
In Geneva 75 year old Khariton Chavichvily recalls plotting with Lenin against Nicholas II. He claims to be last Menshevik and now denounces Communist terror while reflecting on the revolutionary circle at Cafe Landolt. Continued on page six.
Childress Business and Professional Women purchased 38 pairs of shoes since September through their Shoe Fund for needy children. Alice Rogers led the program and introduced Julia Ross who presented a Valentine story and Fern Maddox who sang several selections at the regular meeting.
A Childress merchant promotes Bargain Day Monday with spring merchandise clearances. He urges shoppers to read Sunday ads and take bargains now, claiming money saved when buying next week.
A seismograph crew from the Texas Seismograph Company of Wichita Falls is moving to Childress and needs five furnished apartments or houses immediately. Landlords with available rentals should contact the Chamber of Commerce.
Childress County Singers will meet from 2 to 4 p m Sunday at King Memorial Church. Surrounding towns are expected to be represented and the public is invited to attend.
Jeff Henderson announced a Sunday meeting at the old bomb site building at the air field to teach first aid and 4 wheel drive vehicle driving under the civil defense program. The session begins at 2 30 p m and invites all interested residents to attend.
Miss Myrtle Iola Felty, 76, died at 7 10 a m in Childress General Hospital. Funeral and burial planned in Wolfe City with Newberry Funeral Home handling. Survived by five sisters Ada Eddins Ethal Owens Tina Murray all in Durant Okla Florence Macon Fort Worth and Ella Armstrong Albuquerque and three nephews Cecil Leslie Carrick Bill Eddins. The Teen Canteen opens Saturday night in the Woman's Department Club after the Childress Perryton game.
