Washington sources say President Kennedy proposes extending unemployment benefits by boosting the payroll tax paid by employers nationwide. The higher levy would apply regardless of state participation, creating a strong incentive for states to join the extension. Continued on page two.
The Federal Housing Authority of Childress will hold its annual meeting Monday February 13 in the office of director Richard D. Bird to elect officers. New director H A Rogers replaces Sam Carmack, appointed by the City Council. other members include Doyle McKinney M K Wilcoxson and Morris Higley who is chairman and Bird vice chairman. Lola Richardson serves as secretary. The group’s housing project application has been approved locally and forwarded to Washington for review.
The Water Committee reported no action after a meeting last night. Bert Hargrave, a committee member, relayed the update while J. W. Chambers serves as chairman.
President Kennedy seeks a multi billion economic program to revive demand and jobs. He calls for expanded Social Security benefits, extended unemployment, higher minimum wage, and increased federal highway and public works spending to lift the economy amid a world crisis.
Dugan Inc unveils a Phillips Petroleum compliant service station at 1007 Avenue Few with an Open House on Saturday. C R Dugan and son Jerry run the father son operation serving five stations in Childress plus outlets at Carey Tell and Kirkland. The event features free drinks candy balloons a tire drawing and Phillips representatives will attend.
The UT student humor magazine The Texas Ranger will elect a new editor today after Lynn Ashby resigned citing censorship. Lynn Ashby, 22, from Dallas, stepped down Tuesday and the editorial committee opened applications. Dr Logan Wilson has resigned as chancellor effective in June.
The hijacked Portuguese liner Santa Maria docked at Recife Brazil and began landing about 600 passengers including 42 Americans after twelve days in captivity. Doctors treated the weak travelers as Red Cross ambulances ferried the seriously ill ashore and into hospitals.
A report to President Kennedy estimates that automation will eliminate about four million office and clerical roles in five years. The study cites unions and notes large job losses across autos, brewing, elevators, and electrical machinery, with Detroit auto workers and steel industry shifts highlighted.
Two North Texas lawmakers urge sweeping changes to how Texas House members elect a speaker. The proposal seeks a one term limit for the speaker and bans floor campaigning and vote pledges. Violations carry a fine up to 1000 dollars and up to six months in jail.
The nursery contracted by county residents is digging almost 1,000 pecan trees for delivery to Greenbelt Supply next week. Jeff Henderson of the CofC-BCD announced the order before finalization. Trees will be picked up and paid for at Greenbelt Supply upon arrival.
United Press International reports mixed weather as groundhogs predict winter despite springlike temperatures. Texas sections see sun, showers, and storms with several inches of rainfall overnight in Tyler Longview and Texarkana.
Today's Childress Jaycees meeting nominated candidates for office. Dick Preston Glen Buckley and Jerry Dugan seek president while Warner West Charles Rogers Jerry Dugan Dick Preston and Dan Craig aim for first vice president. Second vice president nominees include Dan Craig Vern Rucker and John Dodgen. A membership drive plans a goat barter then barbecue.
Several windows were broken at the Bible Baptist Church on 710 NW and the house behind it at 891 NW, plus a garage across the alley from 801 NW, police report. A wheel and tire were stolen from a pickup belonging to Dave Brummett at 600 B SE.
The Farm Bureau meets at 7 30 p m in the Vocational Ag Building to view The Unchanged Frontier detailing Cotton John s Canadian tour with Wheat Heart of the Nation and related reflections.
Cub Pack 63 will meet at 7 30 p m today in First Methodist Church Fellowship Hall for a community gathering and activities.
Representative Will Ehrie of Childress was named by Speaker James A. Thurman to the committees of Common Carriers Liquor Regulation Military and Veterans Affairs Public Lands and Buildings and Public Printing. Ehrie, serving his third term, is praised as a respected member expected to work with energy for Texas.
Frank L. Ehrie Jr. of Childress was among nineteen students inducted into Kappa Delta Pi at McMurry College. The ceremony took place January 31. Ehrie, a junior English major with a French minor, serves as Totem faculty editor and belongs to Alpha Chi.
Doyle McKinney will leave Sunday for Denton to attend a weeklong defense school. Mrs. McKinney will accompany him on the trip.
Texas voters could legalize horse racing under a constitutional amendment filed by Rep. W. E. Berry. The plan lets local option racing in Dallas and seven counties with parimutuel betting taxed at 4.4 percent up to $400,000 and 7 percent thereafter, aiming to raise about $1 million for the state treasury in the first year.
Mrs. Vern Rucker praised the 19 sub-chairmen and the Mothers March workers for a successful fund drive. The effort helped raise a large share of the $1,100 targeted for the March of Dimes, with counter dime cards to be distributed this week and a final total expected soon.
