Monkey the bull that sparked a US beef breed
King Ranch in Texas developed the Santa Gertrudis breed by crossing Herefords with Brahmas. The young bull Monkey, born in 1920, sired 150 bulls and laid the groundwork for a herd now about 90 000 strong in 43 states and four foreign countries. In 1940 the USDA recognized Santa Gertrudis as America’s first beef breed.
