Vienna reports Hungarians gamble with death as 48 hour general strike begins to protest the Soviet backed Radar regime. About 10 000 rebels clash with Soviet troops north of Budapest amid food shortages and martial law.
Defense attorneys indicate they may finish their case today in the NAACP plea of privilege to move a permanent injunction hearing out of East Texas. The state argues Tyler court jurisdiction while presenting congressional records and a Roy Wilkins letter to show NAACP lobbying. The NAACP counters the Tyler branch was not involved and backs Austin or Dallas for the hearing.
The Childress Salvation Army kickoff breakfast opened the annual fund campaign led by chairman Kenneth E. Jones. Campaign chairman Earl Preston urged thorough yet rapid work with about 125 volunteers organized under team captains to cover all divisions and meet Friday reporting deadlines.
Coach Frank Pulattie spoke at the Lions Club noon meeting about the average high school athletic program costs. He cited a football equipment cost of 160 dollars per player and a total squad cost of 7 680 dollars for 48 players, with 168 hours of practice and 22 percent of hours in actual play per season. He noted expenses exclude scouting and laundry. The club also announced the annual Christmas party for Ruth Fife and the Salvation Army Drive kickoff with guests Hoyt Davis and Dan Johnson. Kenneth Jeffers led the program and a film of Southwestern Conference Football Highlights was shown by Howard Newberry.
Frank Barksdale announced a mass meeting for all railroad employees and their dependents at 1 o clock Saturday afternoon. John Griner of the Railroad Retirement Board in Chicago will explain the act. Employees are urged to bring their wives. meeting sponsored by the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes.
Andrew Simmons, described as a local Negro, was fined 25 dollars in City Court after pleading guilty to misdemeanor theft. He allegedly stole a battery from a northeast Childress residence, according to police.
Danny Howard, who played multiple backfield and end positions for the 1956 Bobcats, was named the Most Valuable Player at the annual Bobcat Mothers banquet. The Southwestern Life Trophy, presented by M. K. Wilcoxson, marked the 17th year of the award.
The Childress City Council voted Monday night to hire Allen Harp, outgoing district attorney, as city attorney after a written ballot on two applications. Richard D. Bird was the other applicant. Forbis will leave the post. The council also denied renewing M. M. Long lease on 70 acres for a fish pond near Baylor Lake and approved shared funding for a new reproduction machine with the Chamber of Commerce and Board of City Development.
South western Bell manager C A Deuschle announced that Childress will begin 10 cent coin telephone calls on December 21 with two nickels or one dime. This marks the first local rate increase for public phones and reflects higher post war operating costs. The 10 cent rate already exists in 47 of 48 states and in over 200 Texas cities.

A strong norther eased after a deep low pressure moved east from the Rockies bringing a southerly wind surge across Texas. Winds in the Fort Worth Dallas area remain strong with a wind warning for local lakes. Dalhart saw temperatures drop to 20 degrees while Childress reported 30 mph winds and Carlsbad New Mexico hit 57 mph. Continued on Page Four.
The federal district court in Houston prepared to deliver the jury charge as deliberations were set to begin in the mail fraud case against George Parr and eight associates. Malcom Wilkey wrapped final arguments, rebutting defenses that linked Gov. Shivers and A G Shepperd to a wider scam while the defense tied the case to a broader political fight.
Delbert Leon Potts of Amarillo changed his plea to guilty on a driving while intoxicated charge in Childress County court and received a $100 fine plus costs and ten days in jail. A. F. Works of Dallas paid $5 and costs on a hot check accusation. John Edward Thompson of Denver pleaded guilty to a DWI charge and was fined $100 with costs and three days in jail. Two cases were continued. County Attorney Charles Reynolds said all pending cases would be called in January to clear the docket.
Southwestern Bell Telephone Company will build a plant department service center behind the dial telephone building in Childress. The center, costing about $5900 and built by Thaten Brothers, includes a 16 by 30 foot frame building with club and training rooms, storeroom, and vehicle storage. The project aims to enable faster installation and maintenance of telephone equipment locally.
United Nations in New York reports Puppet Hungary walked out of the UN assembly today to protest the Hungarian question remaining on the agenda. Imre Horvath led the Budapest regime delegation as the 17 nation resolution condemning Soviet troops in Hungary is debated.
Warsaw Radio reports Polish students clashed with police and troops in Stettin during anti Soviet demonstrations. The unrest involved smashed windows at the Soviet consulate, overturned streetcars, and arrests, with army units called to quell the trouble.
A report of an explosion on Silvertip mountain in British Columbia gave searchers a lead in the fate of 62 aboard a missing Trans-Canada Airlines plane. Nine lodge guests heard the blast Sunday night about 50 minutes after last radio contact. Radar contact with the missing plane was lost near Silvertip as weather hampered a search.
A wind whipped storm brought blizzard conditions to the Dakotas and Minnesota and chilled the upper Midwest. Temperatures were set to fall across Michigan Wisconsin Iowa Minnesota North and South Dakota Wyoming and Nebraska as a Canadian air mass moved southeastward. Winds up to 90 mph snarled highways and damaged a television antenna tower in Cedar Rapids while a Trans-Canada airliner crash was blamed on the same system.
Dr Clifton Tennison says construction behind the First Baptist Church will house six Sunday School departments for infants to five years old, expanding capacity by about 100 children. The remodeled army apartment will have stucco siding, an east awning, central heat and air, reconfigured parking, and landscaping. The building should be ready sometime after the year begins.
Fifteen boys joined Boy Scout Troop 62 at an organization meeting last night at Central Christian Church. Scoutmaster Gene Slingerland announced the next official meeting for Friday night December 21 and invited boys aged 11 to 14 to attend.
Washington reports Britain secured a half billion dollar IMF loan with an additional standby credit of 738.53 million dollars to draw in foreign currencies. The package aims to bolster Britain’s reserves after Suez disruption. U.S. lawmakers voiced caution over financing, seeking assurances Britain will not oppose U.N. interests and questioning debt waivers.
