American troops pressed a major push in the Mekong Delta near Saigon, reporting heavy Viet Cong losses and 99 North Vietnamese killed in a helicopter assault. Four Americans were wounded as fighting raged Friday night and Saturday.
The Index reports a tight poll on whether the Chamber of Commerce should hire a manager. Fifty three votes for and thirty nine against marked the closest survey yet, with dues likely to rise if hired. The next query asks if the Chief of Police should stay elective or become appointive, referencing historical charter changes and a past petition.
Authorities traced the blood spattered auto of Baylor University coed Jill Brown 19 to a Lake Air shopping center in northwest Waco. Her father Glenn Brown said he last saw her Friday and searched after she missed a date. A clothing store saleslady reported seeing Brown mid afternoon.
Ken Bailey who handles Hydro Jets and Olympic TVs for M and M Sales has become representative of the Panhandle Plains Automobile Club in the area. The club, affiliated with the American Automobile Association, has offices in Lubbock and headquarters in Amarillo and covers 25 South Plains counties after recent changes. Morris Higley of Childress is one of ten directors of the organization.
Surplus commodities will be distributed Wednesday and Thursday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm at 217 Ave A Northeast. Persons must have a signed statement authorizing them to pick up supplies for someone else.
The Texas Railroad Association reports Childress County paid 3474 in annual taxes to local agencies. statewide railroads paid over 19 million on right of way and property. Schools receive the largest share, with funds also going to cities counties and road programs. Many Texas railroad employees contribute taxes and some railroads offer scholarships to students.
Gene Caskey of Dallas was arraigned in County Court on driving while intoxicated charges. He pled guilty and received fine and court costs totaling 142 dollars plus three days in jail. Probation was granted for six months following pickup by the Texas Highway Patrol per County Attorney records.
Wayne C. Taylor unknown address ran a brief scam Friday in Childress. He made small purchases in several stores, writing checks mostly on First National Bank and leaving with about $36 in cash after returning the goods to the stores. Police warned merchants to require positive ID before cashing checks.
Thant said Viet Cong approached to establish a U N office in New York similar to the Algerian National Liberation Front in the past. The request would not seek Security Council or General Assembly action, and visa feasibility was to be checked by the U S Mission.
The Red River Sportsmen's Club at Baylor Lake hosts a duck-goose barbecue starting at 12 30 p m. The public is invited to a 1 p m trap shoot at the club house. President Bob Moates says the barbecue is free.
Cape Town doctors, led by Dr. Christian Barnard, prepare a second heart transplant for 58 year old dentist Dr Phillip Blaiberg as Washkansky shows early signs of accepting the alien heart. Barnard says rejection is normal and controllable with cobalt bomb therapy while standby teams await a suitable donor.
Lynda Bird Johnson and Capt. Charles S. Robb wed in a brief East Room ceremony at the White House with 500 guests. President Johnson officiated as Robb prepares for duty in Vietnam, and guest George Hamilton attended the holiday ceremony.
Gov. John Connally says he will not endorse any candidate and may skip endorsements entirely. House Speaker Ben Barnes notes it is too late for Connally to rally behind a nominee as supporters have aligned with others. Lt. Gov. Preston Smith and Secretary of State John L. Hill divide potential backing, neither receiving Connally's blessing.
Hollywood police suspect two young women found in Whisky Creek Canal were murdered by underworld figures. The frilly bathing suit wearers, ages late teens and early 20s, were weighted with concrete blocks and tied with cord before being dumped. Autopsies reported multiple stab wounds, a head fracture, and in one case a chest wound with a lung puncture. Police search for identification and motive continues as investigators review gangland activity on the Gold Coast.
Folk singer Jimmie Rodgers, 33, hospitalized in Glendale after a skull fracture from a freeway incident, was rushed into another emergency brain operation as doctors termed his condition extremely critical. He previously had a four hour operation to remove a blood clot and stop hemorrhaging, after convulsions and a reported assault near the San Diego Freeway.
