Natural trees still favored by American families in holiday survey
The Christmas tree industry remains large as surveys show about one third of households prefer artificial trees, while 35 to 37 percent display natural trees. About 25 percent have no tree. Artificial trees lack ecological benefits. natural trees are biodegradable. More than 35 million trees will be sold this year nationwide, with wholesale value near 90 million dollars and total sales around 210 million dollars. Trees are grown in nearly every state, concentrated around the Great Lakes, Northeast, and Northwest, on about 450000 acres. Sixty to twelve years needed to grow replacement stock. 85 million new seedlings planted last spring to replace harvests. Popular types include Scotch pine, Douglas fir, balsam fir, spruce, and Fraser fir.
