New Cotton May Control Boll Weevil
The Agriculture Department reports that Frego bract cotton, a mutant found in Arkansas in 1940, can reduce boll weevil populations by 66 to 94 percent though not high enough for commercial use. Dr. Johnie M. Jenkins says breeding into high quality cotton could yield commercial varieties within five years. The plant’s narrow twisted bracts disorient female weevils and extend their movement time, limiting egg laying and potentially reducing pesticide needs in cotton farming.
