President hails AFL-CIO merger urges minority protections
President Eisenhower telephoned from Gettysburg to praise the newly merged AFL-CIO for its great opportunity to bolster democracy. He urged the 16 million member union to protect minority views and accurately reflect them in meetings. Mrs Eisenhower spoke by telephone as the merger convention opened before about two thousand spectators at the 71st Regimental Armory.

Funeral services for Wilmer Edward Rule Sr. 62 were held at 3 p.m. at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Clifton Tennison and Rev. George A Curlee ministers officiating. Burial followed at Childress cemetery under Newberry Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Jim Fullingham Allan Shahan Carl Hudson Calvin Haralson Joe Bryant Hollis Reavis Booker McCraw and Dewey Smith. Rule died at the West Texas Utility plant where he worked after a heart attack Saturday night. He was born January 27 1893 in Bellville NL and moved to this county in 1922. He had worked for West Texas Utility since November 1922. Survivors include his widow three sons Wilmer E Rule Jr in Lake Pauline James Henry Rule in Dallas Mitchell Rule in Childress two daughters Mrs E R Trammell in Amarillo Mrs L B Snyder in Memphis one brother M E Rule in Monterrey Calif one sister Mrs J E Pockrus in Santa Rosa Calif and 11 grandchildren.
